The Internet does not work 7. Setting up an Internet connection in Windows XP. After reinstalling Windows, the Internet may not work for only two reasons

Reinstalling the operating system always involves reinstalling drivers for all devices, including the Wi-Fi adapter, which is responsible for the operation of the wireless Internet. This driver is not always installed independently with Windows. Quite often this does not happen and the Wi-Fi driver must be installed manually yourself.

You will learn how to do this to restore Wi-Fi on a laptop after reinstalling Windows in this article.

Restoring Wi-Fi after reinstalling the system

So, first you need to make sure that the driver is really missing. To do this, we manage the computer and make sure that it contains devices without drivers.

Go to computer management

Go to Device Manager from the Computer Management window

A Wi-Fi adapter with an uninstalled driver is usually signed as a network adapter or an unknown device. (Image with exclamation mark).

Device with uninstalled driver

If you don’t have devices that require driver installation, then it’s worth checking.

There are 2 ways to search for drivers for a Wi-Fi adapter:

  • Download it from the official website of the laptop manufacturer;
  • Download the free driver assembly DriverPack Solution.

The first option, downloading the Wi-Fi driver from the official website, is more correct, since there you will find a guaranteed working driver.

After opening this image, launch it from the “Computer” window as a regular disk and in the autorun window select “Install drivers: DriverPack Solution”.

Good day.

When you install a new Windows, as a rule, the system automatically configures many settings (will install universal drivers, set the optimal firewall configuration, etc.).

But it just so happens that some things are not automatically configured when reinstalling Windows. And many who reinstalled the OS for the first time are faced with one unpleasant thing - the Internet not working.

In this article I want to look at the main reasons why this happens and what to do about it. (especially since there are always a lot of questions regarding this topic)...

The most common reason why there is no Internet (note after installing a new Windows OS)- this is the absence of a network card driver in the system. Those. the reason is that the network card simply doesn't work...

In this case, a vicious circle results: There is no internet, because... there is no driver, and the driver cannot be downloaded - because... no Internet! If you don’t have a phone with Internet access (or another PC), then most likely you won’t be able to do without the help of a good neighbor (friend)...

Usually, if the problem is related to the driver, then you will see something like the following picture: a red cross will light up above the network icon, and an inscription something similar to this: "Not connected: no connections available"...

In the control center - on the right there will be a tab "Changing adapter settings" - this is what you need to open.

In network connections you will see your adapters with drivers installed. As you can see in the screenshot below, my laptop does not have a driver for the Wi-Fi adapter (there is only an Ethernet adapter, and even that is disabled).

By the way, check, it’s possible that you have the driver installed, but the adapter itself is simply turned off (as in the screenshot below - it will just be gray and it will say “Disabled”). In this case, simply enable it by right-clicking on it and selecting the appropriate menu in the pop-up context menu.

Network connections

I also recommend looking into the device manager: there you can see in detail which equipment has drivers and which do not. Also, if there is a problem with the driver (for example, it does not work correctly), then the device manager marks such equipment with yellow exclamation marks...

To open it, do the following:

  • Windows 7 - in the Run line (in the START menu), paste devmgmt.msc and press ENTER.
  • Windows 8, 10 - press the WIN+R button combination, paste devmgmt.msc and press ENTER (screenshot below).

In Device Manager, open the Network Adapters tab. If your equipment is not in the list, it means there are no drivers in the Windows system, which means that the equipment will not work...

How to solve the driver issue?

  1. Option #1 - try updating the hardware configuration (in Device Manager: just right-click on the network adapters header and select the desired option in the context menu that pops up. Screenshot below).
  2. Option No. 2 - if the previous option did not help, you can use the special 3DP Net utility (It weighs about 30-50 MB, which means it can be downloaded even using your phone. Moreover, it works without an Internet connection);
  3. Option number 3 - download on the computer of a comrade, neighbor, friend, etc. a special driver package - an ISO image of ~10-14 GB, and then run it on your PC. There are a lot of such packages floating around the Internet, I personally recommend Driver Pack Solutions ;
  4. Option No. 4 - if none of the previous ones worked and did not give results, I recommend looking for the driver by VID and PID.

And this is what the tab will look like when the driver for the Wi-Fi adapter is found (screen below).

If you can't connect to the network after updating the driver...

In my case, for example, Windows refused to search for available networks and after installing and updating the drivers, it still showed an error and an icon with a red cross.

Next, the troubleshooter will automatically begin to fix problems associated with network inaccessibility and advise you on each step. After the button has been pressed "Show list of available networks"- the troubleshooting wizard configured the network accordingly and all available Wi-Fi networks became visible.

Actually, the last step remains - select your network (or the network for which you have a password to access) and connect to it. That's what was done...

Entering data to connect to the network... (clickable)

2. Network adapter is disconnected / Network cable is not connected

Another common reason for the lack of Internet is a disabled network adapter (with the driver installed). To check this, you need to open the network connections tab (where all network adapters that are installed in the PC and for which there are drivers in the OS will be shown).

The easiest way to open network connections is to press the WIN+R buttons together and enter ncpa.cpl (then press ENTER. In Windows 7, the run line is located in START"e).

Opening the Network Connections tab in Windows 10

In the network connections tab that opens - pay attention to the adapters that are displayed in gray (i.e. colorless). Next to them there will also be an inscription: “Disabled”.

Important! If there is nothing at all in the list of adapters (or the adapters you are looking for are not there), most likely you simply do not have the necessary driver in your system (the first part of this article is devoted to this).

To enable such an adapter, simply right-click on it and select “Enable” in the context menu. (screenshot below).

After the adapter is turned on, pay attention to whether there are any red crosses on it. As a rule, the reason will even be indicated next to the cross, for example, in the screenshot below “The network cable is not connected.”

If you have a similar error, you need to check the network cable: perhaps it was chewed by pets, touched by furniture when it was moved, the connector was poorly crimped, etc.

3. Incorrect settings: IP, default gateway, DNS, etc.

Some ISPs require you to manually configure certain TCP/IP settings (this applies to those who do not have a router into which these settings have been entered once, and then you can reinstall Windows at least 100 times).

You can find out whether this is so in the documents that your Internet provider gave you when concluding the contract. Usually, they always indicate all the settings for Internet access (as a last resort, you can call and check with support).

Everything is set up quite simply. In network connections (how to access this tab is described above, in the previous step of the article), select your adapter and go to its properties.

Ethernet Network Adapter Properties

After installing the latest Windows 10, you want to try out all sorts of functions of the operating system, download and install programs - in general, try it out 100%. But it may turn out that the first time you start it, for some reason the Internet does not work. This is a fairly common problem that can be solved by knowing the specifics of your network connection.

Ways to access the web

Used at home:

  • Ethernet
  • WiFi
  • PPPoE
  • 3G/4G USB modems

The most common connection method, used by most providers that provide unlimited access to network resources, is a regular wire that runs into the apartment and is directly plugged into the network card connector. This connection is called Ethernet. In addition to a direct connection, the wire can first go to the router or ADSL modem, and then to the computer.

Wi-Fi connection is no less popular, but behind it is usually the same Ethernet, only the router distributes the Internet throughout the apartment using the Wi-Fi signal. Some providers provide access via a high-speed channel - PPPoE connection. In fact, the same wire, but the setup is completely different. Finally, in recent years, compact USB modems that you can take with you have become very popular. They operate in the 3G and 4G bands.

If after a clean installation of Windows 10 or upgrading it from a “seven”/”eight” you do not have the Internet, first of all determine which connection method from the ones listed above you are using.

By the way : If the network does not work after upgrading to Windows 10, pay attention to the installed programs. Conflicts between antivirus and firewall, for example, can easily lead to similar errors.

It looks like this: the computer perfectly sees the network card and wireless connections, but even when connected, it does not load pages in the browser. You need to remove the conflicting applications and reboot.

Solution

Knowing for sure the type of connection, it is easier to understand “where to dig.” It’s good if the driver for the network card is simply not installed. This can happen in the following cases:

  • if the standard package of Windows 10 components does not include a driver for the network equipment of your model (if) - just install it;
  • if the driver from the previous OS version did not suit the “top ten”, a newer version is needed, and in some cases a rollback to an older one;
  • If, when upgrading to a new operating system, the driver crashes for some reason, simply install a new one.

Determining whether the lack of Internet is due to the lack of a driver is very simple: the computer will not find the equipment, be it a network card or a USB modem - they will not be detected in the system or will appear as unknown. Of course, the driver for the network card must be downloaded from the official website of the card manufacturer or motherboard, if the card is built-in.

No matter how great the temptation may be to do this using an auto-installer program for all the necessary drivers, it is better to abandon this method. There is a high chance of installing the wrong software, which will then entail unnecessary efforts to remove and clean up debris.

How to start a network if you have Ethernet

Ideally, it is enough to stretch the wire from the provider to the computer directly, connect it to the appropriate connector and everything should work (of course, with a properly functioning network card driver). This means that your provider uses DHCP technology, that is, it distributes IP addresses to its subscribers automatically.

But such an option as “white” IP is also possible, that is, static, issued to each subscriber. This address, as well as the DNS used, should have been given to you on a printout on the day you connected to the Internet. If you haven’t found such a sheet, all you have to do is call technical support and tell them your subscriber number. You need to fill in the required information at:

  • Network and Sharing Center (you can get here by right-clicking on the Internet connection icon in the lower right corner of the Windows 10 panel)
  • Change adapter settings
  • Ethernet (right click)

  • Highlighting the line “IP version 4”, click on the “Properties” button

Here you need to select the items “Use the following (IP and DNS)” and enter your numbers. If the Internet does not work, try rebooting.

Similar actions can be done if the cord goes first to the router or ADSL modem, and then to the computer. If everything is done correctly, but there is still no Internet, check whether the listed devices are working correctly. There is still a small chance that the provider binds to the MAC address of the network card. Clarify this issue in communication with technical support, if necessary.

Important : The checkboxes opposite the lines “IP versions 4 and 6” should be checked. Sometimes they are not there and this becomes the reason for the Internet not working.

WiFi

Typically, Windows 10 installs the driver for Wi-Fi without any problems and the Internet works the first time you turn it on. If there is no network, as in the previous part, check whether the drivers for the Ethernet and Wi-Fi adapter are installed and whether the latter is turned on (does the computer see other Wi-Fi networks), check the checkboxes in the properties of the Ethernet adapter and whether the router is configured correctly .

PPPoE

After installing a new OS, there is no PPPoE connection by default - it needs to be configured. It may also crash when upgrading to Windows 10. To fix the situation, follow these steps:

  • Network and Sharing Center
  • Creating a new connection

  • Internet connection

  • High speed

After that, in the window that opens, enter the connection data given to you by your provider (login and password). If you do not have them, then call technical support. Click “Connect”.

USB modem

Similar to the previous method, you need to create a new connection, first making sure that the modem is “picked up” by the system (the driver is installed and the device is detected correctly). If there is no driver for your modem model for Windows 10, an “eight” or “seven” may be suitable. The steps for creating a new connection are similar to working with setting up PPPoE, only after the “Internet Connection” item, select “Dial-up” (will appear in the list if the modem is working correctly) and in the window that opens, enter your data: number, login and password.

Please note: after installing or upgrading to Windows 10, when using a 3G or 4G modem, there may be no Internet due to poor coverage or signal. That is, the OS itself is not always to blame in such a situation.

Due to the large amount of garbage and various programs, sooner or later, every PC user has to reinstall the operating system.

To do this, you may find the article on how to install Windows useful. Unfortunately, some builds, regardless of version, may not support connected hardware.

After reinstalling Windows, the Internet does not work, what should I do? Many users have to face this problem.

Solving it is not difficult, as practice shows, this is most often due to network card drivers. Each component of a PC requires the installation of special programs (drivers), and they may not be included in the operating system.

Why doesn't the Internet work when reinstalling Windows?

The first step is to connect the cable to the computer and make sure that the indicator on the network card lights up. As a rule, it lights up green and after connecting the cable, it immediately lights up:

If the light does not light up, your equipment is not working, or there is a problem on the provider's side. You can call the company that provides you with access to the World Wide Web and find out what the problem is.

If the indicator lights up, then the network card is working and the problem is different. This is where the instructions will come in handy. In general, the instructions are not very different from other operating systems. Before configuring Internet settings, you should install drivers.

If you do not want to use programs to install drivers and want to check whether the network card is being used by the computer, you need to go to the properties of the “My Computer” folder. No icon on your desktop? Login to it via “Start”:

When you open the computer properties (on Windows 7), you will notice a link to go to the device manager section:

After that, look for network adapters where your network card should appear. It may be in the list of unknown devices, in which case you need to right-click on it and click on the driver update item:

After installing the network card, the Internet may still not work because you have not configured the necessary settings. To do this, open the control panel (also through Start), select “Network and Internet”, and then go to network connections.

There you will see the connection to the PC, you need to go to properties:

You will have a connection without access, still go to properties, where you will need to select “Internet Protocol 4” and enter the data provided by your provider:

You can check the information with your provider or look at the contract; it should indicate the IP address, gateway, DNS server and other information. You indicate it and just click OK. As a rule, you need to set the information to be received automatically, but each provider has its own working methods.

Now you know why after reinstalling Windows Internet does not work, and you can solve this problem yourself. Most often this is due to drivers, so try updating or installing them.

If problems continue, consider buying a new card from Aliexpress (they have the lowest prices). You can even buy a card with wireless access (via WI-Fi).

Installing the Windows 7 operating system takes a little time. After reinstalling it on the computer, each user is faced with the need to download all programs, restore settings, connect devices such as a printer, router, etc. But, despite all the connections, a situation often arises when, after installing Windows 7, the Internet does not work.

Why does the Internet not work after reinstallation?

This can happen with any operating system, but in most cases, after installation, Windows 7 almost never installs a driver on the Wi-Fi router, and therefore it will not work. The reasons may also be due to problems with the equipment or due to the Internet provider.

No driver for adapter

Typically, devices should connect automatically after this, but a driver from the adapter manufacturer will create better conditions for its operation.

The most common reason that the Internet does not work is an incompatible or incorrectly installed driver. And in order to understand whether your computer has this problem, you should:

  1. Login to the control panel.
  2. Open network connections.
  3. Now we check the presence of a local network connection, if there is one, then go to the “Device Manager” and check the activity of the driver for the equipment. If it is not active, then there will be an exclamation mark next to the router icon.

If it is in “Network Connections”, it means the device is not connected, and if it is not in the “Device Manager”, it means that it is not working or the system simply did not detect it.

No settings or connection

Often, in order to access the Internet, a local network is used, and the providers from whom you buy Internet require network card settings. Therefore, you need to see if you have entered the connection settings. To do this, go to “Network Connections” and highlight local network connections, then click “Details”. There we make sure that fields such as IP address, mask, and gateway are filled in. If any line is empty, you need to fill it in manually.

We do it like this:

  • go to “Control Panel”, then “Network Connections”;
  • left-click to activate “Local Area Connections” and “Properties”;
  • Next, find the “TCP/IP” protocol and click on “Properties”;
  • enter the provider settings.
