When releasing the Playstation 3 to the market, Sony, for some reason, decided that the unique ecosystem of the console would be a huge advantage over its competitors - and therefore condemned developers to difficulty porting their games to the unique architecture. This also affected the company’s joysticks - while Xbox joysticks connect to a computer (PC) without problems, it is problematic to “make friends” with the Dualshock from the Playstation 3 era with a PC. However, not everything is so complicated - and in this article we will talk about the most popular ways to connect Playstation 3 joysticks to a computer.

In general, the computer will be able to recognize the connected Dualshock – and you will even be able to play some (mostly emulated) games. The problem is that Sony gamepads work with technology DirectInput control, while the PC standard is X-input. It is for this transition that special programs are needed.

Motionjoy program

First, let's decide what we need:

Connecting Dualshock 3 to PC via MotionJoy

Connect the PS3 gamepad to the PC and open the MotionJoy application. In the upper left corner of the program we see the tab “ DriverManager" and go here. If you connected the controller, under the inscription “ HardwareLocation» the joystick symbol should appear. As a rule, the connected port itself is indicated, as in the screenshot.

Click on the joystick symbol (Port_#0001.Hub_#0003 in the photo above) and a small menu will appear under it, click on LoadDriver and wait a bit. When a green checkmark appears under MotioninJoy, the driver will be downloaded. Despite the fact that the driver itself weighs only a few megabytes, the download can take a long time, since it comes from the utility’s personal server, and the download speed often does not exceed 50-100 kb/s.

Now go to the tab " Profiles"(upper left corner in MotionJoy). A joystick will be displayed in the “Connected game controller” window, and just below you will be offered several emulation options to choose from. Most often you will be interested in “ X-inputDefault", like the Xbox 360. That is, in fact, we emulate the Xbox gamepad. Options with PS1 and PS2 are needed in order to run games from these platforms through the emulator, and the settings below will help you adjust the vibration motors and LED on the gamepad.

If MotionJoy does not see the gamepad

It happens that the DS3 tool (aka Motion Joy) does not see the PS3 joystick. In this case, you need to do two things:

  1. Check if there is a problem with the cable (when connected to a computer, the LED on the joystick should light up).
  2. Connect the controller after going to the Driver Manager tab in MotionJoy.

That’s basically it – there’s nothing complicated about connecting the Dualshock to a PC via MotionJoy. But let’s look at another, alternative, method.

Connecting a Playstation 3 gamepad to a PC using the SCPToolkit program

First, we need to download the utility and install it. Please note that SCP Toolkit will offer many options when installing. So, for example, Dualshock 3 is a gamepad from PS3, and Dualshock 4 is from PS4, so install the desired version. Also worth disableBluetooth if you are going to use the joystick via cable. After installation, be sure to click on “Run Driver Installer” - this will install the drivers for the Xbox 360 gamepad on your computer.

After installing the driver, connect the PS3 controller to the computer, the utility screen will display something like this:

When the computer detects the gamepad, the " Next", click it and proceed to start the emulation.

This screen will show all gamepads connected to the computer.

The advantage of SCPTools over Motion Joy is that it responds adequately to Bluetooth connections and has open source. Also, the developers of this utility were able to quickly create an emulator for Dualshock 4, which significantly increased the popularity of the program.

Connecting DualShock3 to Android using Sixaxis

Let's make a reservation right away - only users with Root access Android users can use this emulator. Therefore, if you do not want to delve into the system of your mobile phone, it is better not to mess with the Dualshock connection procedure.

Second important point - smartphone compatibility. To check it, just download the Sixaxis Compatibility Checker application and see if the smartphone is on the list.

If the device is on the list, then download the Sixaxis Pair Tool program to your PC.

And one more thing - it is important to understand that the Dualshock will only work in those games that have special control settings for the gamepad.

Today, fans of the virtual gaming space are divided into two sides - those who like to play on a personal computer and fans of consoles (game consoles). Both areas of the gaming industry have a strong position in the entertainment market and a huge fan base, as well as many enterprises that are engaged in both the creation and modernization of gaming electronic devices, and the release of content for a specific platform.

The DualShock 3 Sixaxis gamepad can be connected to a computer.

The biggest difference between these two directions is the difference in the way the player interacts with the platform. On consoles these devices are called “joysticks” (gamepads), while on personal computers they use standard input peripherals (keyboard and mouse). And both management methods have their positive sides.

Many times users have asked the question: is it possible to play a computer game using a game console controller? Indeed, there are many games for a personal computer that are much easier and more convenient to play on a gamepad.

Connecting the DualShock 3 controller to the computer

We are trying to connect the DualShock 3 Sixaxis joystick to a personal computer. The controller comes with a USB cable, which we use to connect and press the central button (labeled PS). Windows will detect and install drivers for the controller, but it will only charge and will not be able to be used on the PC.

Note. If Windows was unable to detect the device and install the driver, try downloading it from the official website and installing it manually (this problem mainly happens when using an OS older than Windows 7).

It is officially impossible to connect a gamepad to a computer, but there are many third-party programs to solve this issue.

We use the very useful Motioninjoy program and configure the gamepad connection:

Note. Judging by the reviews, many users, sharing their experiences, recommend using Xbox 360 Controller emulation to play on a personal computer.

  1. We leave the utility enabled, launch the game we need and test the joystick.

And also in the program you can identify the device and install the appropriate driver if Windows was unable to do this itself. We go to the Driver Manager tab; the driver we need should already be present in the list. Check the box and click the Install All button.

Note. Starting from Windows 8 and older, you may encounter one problem. Windows 8, 8.1, 10 will not install drivers without signatures! Therefore, we need to go to the control panel and disable this feature.

Thanks to such small and simple manipulations, we can now freely launch the game we need and enjoy the process. Playing your favorite games on your favorite devices.

Hello Geektimes! Today, of course, is not Friday, but the topic is very Friday. We all love to relax, everyone does it in their own way, and, of course, among the audience of the IT resource there are both fans of video games and fans of the PC as a gaming platform. There is no doubt that it is convenient to play shooters and RPG/RTS on a mouse and keyboard, but there are entire genres where analog control from a gamepad/joystick/steering wheel is preferable.

Today we will figure out how we are doing with connecting the most popular controllers to a PC: the original XBox 360, XBox One and PS3/PS4 gamepads.

XBox 360 Gamepad for Windows

The simplest and most accessible gamepad in terms of connection. All you need to do is purchase and connect it to your PC. Windows itself will detect a compatible X-input device and download drivers. After the central button shows one burning segment, you can safely go fight monsters, conquer race tracks and enjoy life.

Advantages and disadvantages:

+ The gamepad itself is inexpensive;

+ Reliable and unpretentious;
- Only wired connection, if you have a wired version, the wireless version of the gamepad is more expensive;

XBox One original Gamepad

The second simplest and most accessible option. It works exactly the same: bought it, connected it, it works. If you don’t like a wired connection, then you can separately get a wireless module, which Microsoft promised to release (apparently, along with Windows 10). Accordingly, the pros and cons are approximately the same.

Advantages and disadvantages:
+ Simpler than ever, pure Plug And Play;
+ All games on Windows with gamepad support are designed specifically for the XBox layout;
+ It is possible to connect via radio and play wirelessly;
- Not the most pleasant price, the wireless module is sold separately;
- Heavier than competitors, and also requires two AA batteries (in some countries batteries are included);
- Not everyone likes the orientation of the sticks (analog controls), it’s a matter of habit and personal preference.

PS3-DualShock 3, SixAxis gamepad or PS4-DualShock4 gamepad

To connect an original gamepad from PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4, you will need a MiniUSB or MicroUSB cable, drivers from the XBox 360 gamepad (if you have Windows 7, 8.1 is not required), Microsoft .Net 4.0 and Visual C++ redistributable packages for Visual Studio 2013 and most importantly - the SCP Driver program.

The procedure is as follows: first, we do not connect the gamepad, but simply install the necessary software. Download original drivers from the XBox 360 gamepad and install. After that, we unpack the SCP Driver archive wherever it is convenient for us (if you want, create a folder in Program Files, if you want, send it somewhere else, it is important that no one accidentally deletes the files).

We connect the gamepad via wire; if a Bluetooth connection is necessary, insert the “whistle” of the USB-Bluetooth adapter (version no lower than 2.1) and wait for the drivers to be installed by the system.

Note: the utility reserves the Bluetooth adapter for gamepads, so it is better to turn off the built-in BT module using the hotkey or from the control panel, if you have one and use it in your laptop/computer. Personally, I recommend this adapter - it works exactly and does not raise any questions for either the system or third-party software.

Next, open ScpDriver.exe, if you have Windows XP or Vista, check the “Force Install” box (in other cases, therefore, do not check it), click the “Install” button and wait for the program to report that the installation was successful.

After performing these simple manipulations, the gamepad will work as X-Input compatible, that is, it is visible in the system as the original controller from the XBox 360. If you want to use a wireless connection, just disconnect the wire from the gamepad, it will automatically switch to a Bluetooth connection.

Advantages and disadvantages:
+ Supports the latest original gamepads from PS3 and PS4;
+ Allows you to use up to 4 gamepads from one USB connection;
+ Gamepads from PS3 are relatively inexpensive;
- Requires manual installation;
- Bluetooth adapters are different and do not always work perfectly with gamepads;

- PS3 gamepads are especially criticized in shooters for having uninformative sticks;

Original PS4 gamepad, alternative method

There is an easier and more pleasant way, which also allows you to squeeze all the juice out of the DualShock 4. It's called InputMapper. This utility allows you to connect an original PS4 gamepad and use it to its fullest: both the touchpad and acceleration sensors will work. All you need for installation is the gamepad itself, the latest version of the program (you can get it here) and five minutes for a simple installation.

The program is simple, with its installation the PS4 gamepad turns into a device as understandable and accessible to the system as the original XBox 360 Gamepad for Windows with two pleasant bonuses. The touchpad works like a trackpad - you can control the cursor from it. Not to say that it’s a very necessary thing, but sometimes you’re too lazy to reach for the mouse or get up from the couch... Accelerometers also work (though I don’t know where they can be used and what games support them, but having a feature is better than not having one).

To connect a PS4 gamepad via Bluetooth, you need to put it in pairing mode: hold down the “share” button (in games it plays the role of “back”) and PS for a few seconds, wait until the gamepad starts flashing the signal LED quickly and intermittently, go to Bluetooth connection menu on your computer and simply connect the controller to your PC. InputMapper perfectly recognizes both wired and wireless connections.

Advantages and disadvantages:
+ Easier than connecting via SCP Driver;
+ Works for everyone and always, there are problems with SCP Driver;
+ All features of the PS4 gamepad work;
+ The gamepad itself is much better than its PS3 counterpart;
+ Bluetooth connection without problems and the need to purchase an external adapter;
- Gamepad price;
- Hints in games will come with XBox buttons: either get used to it and remember something somewhere, or buy stickers for the PS gamepad buttons;

Which gamepad to choose

Actually, the question here is whether you have a console at home or not. If there is, there is probably no point in switching to gamepads of an alternative layout (unless, of course, you have experience with them and you are not sure that the XBox layout approach is better than the PS and vice versa).

If you have never had a console, and you take a gamepad for some Dark Souls, playing Need For Speed from the couch, or something else, the most affordable and easiest option is to buy an XBox 360 Gamepad for Windows. No problems, native support for all games, excellent ergonomics.

As for the PS4 and XBox One gamepads, the choice here, again, depends on personal preference, however, here's what I noticed.

The PS4 gamepad is better built. The body materials look (and feel) more expensive, all the buttons click perfectly, and the source of players' main complaint - the analog sticks - have been shortened and made much more sensitive. If the original PS3 controllers made me spit, the PS4 controller evokes exceptionally warm feelings. The touchpad gets in the way in some games, but it's a matter of habit. The controller has two disadvantages: in my opinion, the cross is simply terrible and very inconveniently located, and the “share” and “option” buttons (in the system they will serve as “back” and “start”, respectively) cannot be pressed blindly.

Unfortunately, I can't say enough good things about the XBox One controller. Yes, its ergonomics have become better, it fits more pleasantly in the hand, the fingers find all the necessary controls themselves, and the new cross is simply excellent, but... the quality of assembly and materials raises not so much questions as doubts about the adequacy of the engineer or designer who approved this work and developed.

Glossy inserts. Glossy buttons. Glossy triggers. It's good that the sticks aren't glossy. Additionally, while I'm a fan of the XBox layout and ergonomics, the XBox One controller is heavier and much less well built than its main competitor. In addition, wireless connectivity is still questionable. I also really didn’t like the new buttons above the triggers - they are tight, uninformative, and look unreliable. Here.

My personal purchase adequacy chart looks like this.

I think every PS3 owner has wondered how to connect a joystick from Sony to a PC. Now I’ll tell you how to do it. I’ll say right away that when using it on a computer, the MAC address of the joystick changes, which can be solved by connecting via a cord to the console and pressing the PS button.

What do we need?

Joystick from PS3.
USB cable from joystick.
(ADDITIONAL, but not required) If you want to play wirelessly via BlueTooth, then you will need a BT adapter.

Why is this necessary?

All modern games are designed for joysticks. Same GTA4. And in general, if you have a large distance between the PC and you, then I think putting a table, a mouse and keyboard on it and pulling whatever wire is not the best solution. After all, you can use this method to play the same way, just lying on the couch with joy.

What do we do?

Connect a PS3 joystick (I'm using the PS3 DualShock3 as an example) to the PC for convenient play of any games.

How exactly will this work, will all games understand Joy?
We will use 2 methods:
1) For all games that support the Xbox360 controller. Namely, we will programmatically pass off our PS3 joystick as an Xbox360 joystick. This is the best and most convenient way. The only downside is that we have A on B, etc., and X on O, etc. But this is just a matter of habit.
2) 3 other methods, or self-tuning for any other games. Unfortunately, with some games in this case you will have to tinker a lot to get proper controls. But if you're lucky, the standard options will do. Also in this case we have support for motion sensors.

Let's get started:
Symbol:
In parentheses it is indicated for example (drive managerinstall). The first name is indicated if you do everything through home (online mode). The second name if you do everything offline (local) mode.

1) Download the program from:
For x32 (x86) systems - http://www.xinputer.com/download/MotioninJoy_060001_x86_signed.zip
For x64 systems - http://www.xinputer.com/download/MotioninJoy_060003_amd64_signed.zip
2) Download local from here - http://forums.motioninjoy.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=989 (all three English Complete Edition archives so that the program does not require Internet)
3) Install the program
4) Place the local folder from the archive into the program directory.
5) Connect our joy from PS3 via USB (!!!) to the computer. Also, if there is a BT adapter, we connect it too.
6) Go to the driver page (drive managerinstall), click Load and wait for the installation to complete.
7) Go to the home page (homelocal). For modern games, select Emulate Xbox360 and click Enable. For old games without xbox360 controller support, we choose any other one to suit our taste and color, or even customize everything ourselves.
This was a cable connection method.

Additional actions (if we want the joy to work via BT adapter)

8) Go to the page about the BT adapter (BluetoothPairBluetooth). We select our joy at the bottom and our adapter at the top. Click Pair Now and Backup this addr.
9) Disconnect our controller from USB
10) Let's play. Joy has to work.
11) Don’t forget if you use the xbox360 controller emulation method, set the game settings to use the xbox360 joystick.
