How to increase the font on a windows 7 laptop. How to increase the font and shortcuts on a PC or laptop? Changing the font in the browser

Many have noticed that on modern computers/laptops, icons and fonts have become smaller, although the diagonal has increased, this is due to the fact that the screen resolution has increased. In one of my previous articles I wrote How to enlarge (reduce) desktop icons in Windows , in this same article I will continue this topic and describe in detail the process of increasing/decreasing the font size and the scale of windows on a computer/laptop.

Enlarge font in Windows XP.

In order to change the font size in Windows XP, there are two ways:

1 Method. Right-click on an empty desktop field and select "Properties" from the context menu.

Select the "Design" tab and in the field Font size select the required size.

2 Method. To use this method, insert the Windows XP installation disc into the DVD drive. After that, right-click on the desktop and select "Properties".

In the menu that opens, open the "Options" tab and click the "advanced" button.

In the "General" tab, select the font magnification scale.

If you want to specify your magnification factor, select "Special parameters" and indicate by what percentage to enlarge the font.

For the settings to take effect, you must restart the computer.

Increase/decrease font, scale in Windows 7.

To change the font and scale of windows in Windows 7, you need to right-click on an empty field of the desktop and select "Screen Resolution".

In the window that opens, select "Make text and other elements larger or smaller."

After this, you will be given a choice between how much to mutilate the font and other elements. Specify which item suits you and click the "Apply" button.

If you would like to change the font to your ratio, select "Other font size (dpi)".

After that, indicate by what percentage you would like to increase the font and window size in Windows 7.

After this, you need to re-login ("Start" - "Log out"). Please note that this procedure will close all applications; close all applications before clicking Quit Now.

Increase/decrease font, scale in Windows 8/8.1.

Right-click on your desktop and select Screen Resolution.

In the properties window that opens, select "Change size of text and other elements."

Using the slider you can change the size of text and windows. If you want to change any specific parameter, such as Window Title, Menu, select the appropriate parameter and specify the size. At the end, don't forget to click "Apply".

As you can see, changing the font size or window scale in Windows is quite simple and easy, regardless of the version of Windows XP/ 7/ 8.

Tired of standard Windows fonts? Do you want to make your computer unique?

Then just change them! How? Find out from our article.

Change text style

Text design for Windows can be set for each interface separately.

In this case, no changes will occur in the program settings as a whole.

It's not at all difficult to do this.

1 Open the Window Color and Appearance tab in the taskbar. The name may differ slightly depending on the version installed on your computer. But the bookmark is responsible for the same function.

2 Now you need to find the “Object” item, in which you will determine the desired interface, which requires changes in the style of writing text.

3 You should set new options for style, size, and color. Such manipulations should be done individually for all sections to be changed.

4 Confirm your actions with the “Ok” button.

5 For the settings to take effect, click “Ok” again.

There are cases when the style for writing text is subject to change, but the rest of its parameters are not available for editing.

Unfortunately, nothing can be done about this - this is the default in the program.

There is another option

Now you can unpack the archive into the Fonts folder of the system directory. After such actions, a new icon with the appropriate type of text will be added.

To view, you need to left-click on the file.

Let's look at one of the simplest options for changing the font size on a Windows 8 computer:

1 First you need to remove the text style suggested by the system. By default, this software variation uses Segoe UI. Save changes.

2 Open again and follow this path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts.

For proper functioning, you should get rid of all system files that may start on Segoe UI.

3 We carry out the same procedure as already described above - we follow the path.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitute

4 You need to create a temporary folder. Set the necessary changes and choose the design you like. This completes the settings.

Changing font settings

Windows 8 lacks much of the functionality that previous versions had.

There are only a tiny number of font-related settings left that the user can control.

To change parameters in the text, follow these steps:

  • You need to right-click to open the menu window and click on the item "Screen resolution"(Screen resolution).

  • A window will open in which you should find the section "Make text and other elements larger or smaller" or in a foreign language "Make text of other items larger or smaller".

“Make text of other items larger or smaller” - select when setting the font

  • The following dialog box will appear in which you can set all the necessary parameters.

  • You can make the letters larger or smaller. Install the style you like.
  • It will also be necessary to indicate in the configurations the scope of the settings. For example, only text documents.
  • Save changes.

It should be remembered that such changes in font design parameters can only be noticed for some of its elements.

Let's try to change the size of the selected font in another way

You need to go to the Control Panel section "Printers and Faxes".

Now you can click on the section. And in the window that pops up, find the “Screen” section. Click on it with your mouse.

On this page you can select a specific scope and set the necessary parameters.

The system is user friendly. But it lacks an option that allows you to make size adjustments in the text.

This requires downloading additional programs or performing complex steps related to editing the registry.

To make such changes, you need to edit the registry.

But? I warn you right away that if you are not sure that the actions will be performed correctly, it is better to leave such manipulations to a specialist.

Through “Start” you need to go to the PC control panel. Find section "Design and personalization", and in it there is a sub-item “Fonts”.

For ease of use, many computers have a function enabled by default that is responsible for placing all programs in alphabetical order.

If it is enabled on your PC, such a section will be easy to find. If not, go down to the very bottom of the page that appears and look for it there.

After you left-click on this sub-item, you will see the entire variety of fonts that the program can offer.

Decide which one is right for you and write down its name so you don’t forget.

When making such a choice, you should remember that some of the options after installation will look exactly like Chinese characters. You should not install such options.

Segoe UI is the default option. It is offered by the tenth version of Windows.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 “Segoe UI (TrueType)”=”” “Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)”=”” “Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)”=”” “Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)”=”” “ Segoe UI Light (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)"="" "Segoe UI"="Font of your choice"

The final line must have the name of the user-selected text design option. Save what you write.

When saving, you will need to specify the correct extension - reg. After double-clicking on a closed file with the left mouse button, a window will appear in which this file will be located.

Upon completion of all actions, you need to restart the computer.

Remove selected font for Windows 10

Both installation and removal of this for a computer is very simple. To delete you need to go to "Printers and Faxes" in the "Start" section and click on the "Delete" button.

We can talk about high-quality interface usability only when all its elements are satisfactory to the majority of users. Windows OS offers an example of such usability, leaving users, among other things, the right to customization. In Windows, you can change icons, icons, wallpapers, install third-party themes, and also adjust font settings. True, in Windows 10 the developers for some reason limited the ability to use third-party fonts, however, getting around this limitation is not difficult.

You may have plenty of reasons to change the font on your Windows 7/10 computer. Some will want to make their Windows original, some will want to make the text more readable, and others will simply be tired of the default system font. How to do this will be shown below. First, let's look at how to increase the font size in Windows 7/10 for individual graphical shell elements. Everything is simple here.

Control Panel and Personalization

If you have Windows 7 or 8.1, go to the “Control Panel”, launch the “Fonts” applet, click the “Change font size” link on the left, select the element for which the font will be adjusted from the drop-down menu, and then select the size of the font itself. Apply the settings.

In the "seven" you can change the font size and typeface for individual elements in the window appearance parameters. To do this, open the “Personalization” applet, click the “Window Color” link, in the window that opens, select an interface element and select the appropriate font for it. By the way, you can change not only the size and typeface of the font, but also its color and density.

System Font Size Changer

Not everything is so obvious in Windows 10. If in version 1703 you could still change font parameters as it is done in Windows 8.1, then in version 1709 and higher you will need the help of third-party tools. You can increase the font size on your computer screen in Windows 10 using the utility System Font Size Changer. When you launch it for the first time, the utility will offer to save the current configuration to a REG file - agree and save.

You can change the font on your computer using System Font Size Changer for window titles (Title Bar), context menus (Menu), message boxes (Message Box), panels (Palette Title), icons (Icon) and tooltips (Tooltip).

Winaero Tweaker

If you need to change the font itself, we recommend using the utility for this purpose Winaero Tweaker. For example, to change the system font in Windows 7/10 (the utility works with all popular OS versions), you need to select the setting in the left panel Advanced Appearance Settings – System font, turn on the “Use the following font” radio button, click “Change system font”, select the font you like in the list that opens, click “OK” and apply the new settings by clicking “Sign out now” at the bottom of the utility window.

In the “Advanced Appearance Settings” section, you can also change the fonts for individual elements: icons (Icon), context menus (Menus), message windows (Message Font), status bar (Status Bar Font) and window titles (Title Bars).

These options allow you not only to select a typeface, but also to enlarge the font on your computer. System Font Size Changer and Winaero Tweaker are free, both support restoring default settings, and both work with Windows 7, 8.1 and 10.

Working with the registry

How else can you change the font on a Windows 7/10 computer? Using a simple registry tweak that replaces the Segoe UI system font with a custom one. Download the archive with registry files from the link, open the file ChangeFont.reg with Notepad and replace the word “FONT” with the name of your new font. Its name can be seen in the folder C:/Windows/Fonts.

Apply the registry tweak and restart your computer. To restore default settings, merge the DefaultFont.reg file, which is also included in the archive.

When setting up fonts in Windows 7/10 through the registry, make sure that the font you are installing supports Cyrillic, otherwise you will get crappy text or empty squares instead of text. This mainly applies to fonts downloaded from the Internet.

Conclusion

There are also other ways to customize the font on a Windows 7/10 computer, but they are either unreliable or outdated. For example, one of the 2015 articles on the Microsoft website suggested installing a font by editing the Win.ini file located in the Windows root directory, but it hardly makes sense to try this option, since the contents of the file have changed significantly since the publication of the article. If you need to change the font size on a computer with Windows 7/10, use either the available standard tools or third-party applications, of which Font Size Changer and Winaero Tweaker are the most convenient.

If you buy a new monitor or connect your computer to the large screen of a modern TV, you may experience a feeling of discomfort associated with icons and fonts that are too small.

Indeed, without having a strong habit, when switching to high-resolution screens, it seems that the letters and buttons (desktop icons) are too small, difficult to distinguish and difficult to read.

And in this case, it makes sense to increase the font size of the operating system.

In addition, increasing the size of letters in Windows 7 can be useful if you have difficulty seeing and do not want to sit at a computer or laptop with glasses.

The simplest increase in the system font will help improve picture quality and simplify work in the operating system in a matter of minutes. But how can you increase the font size in practice?

How to increase font size in Windows 7

1. Click on the “Start” button, which is located on the lower left side of the monitor screen. The same results can be obtained by pressing the “Windows” button (with a characteristic icon) on the keyboard of a computer or laptop.

3. Here we look for the “Design and Personalization” option and click on it.

4. Among other icons, options and links, we will be interested in the “SCREEN” icon. You need to click on it with the mouse.

5. In a new Windows 7 window that opens, we are asked to choose among the options:

  • Small (meaning font) – 100%
  • Medium (font) – 125%
  • Large (may not have such a function) – 150%

When the font is enlarged, the system will inform you that individual display blocks may not fit on the screen, but this should not worry us, since with an enlarged font it will still be easier to understand the system than with small and small letters.

Accordingly, select the font size option that we consider suitable and click on the “Apply” button.

About other font sizes

In certain builds and versions of Windows 7, in the same window you can find a link (on the right side) called “Other font size”.

This option is not available everywhere, but if it is available, you can use it and set the optimal letter size as a percentage.

Size is determined in dots per inch or percentage, based on the operating system's standard font size (standard 100%).

So, you can experiment with these settings and choose the font size that you find optimal. The main thing is not to forget to confirm the changes using the “Apply” button!

In addition, if you are working with a browser, and not in the operating system itself, you can use the “Zoom” option, which will be easy to find in the “VIEW” menu section. By setting the desired scaling ratio, you will make it easier for you to work with the browser by increasing the font size to the desired value.

There are still people alive who had to deal with operating systems without a GUI (graphical user interface). In these systems, the problem with fonts was permanent.

It arose both when trying to view documents, when “crackers” appeared on the screen instead of normal text, and when trying to make fonts that were more pleasing to the eye.

The character space in DOS had a fixed size, and the screen surface could display no more than 25 x 80 (200 in total) letters. With various tricks it was possible to double this number - at the expense of losing the quality of text perception. Manipulations with graphic screens required serious programming knowledge and were inaccessible to the average user.

Only the birth of an OS with a graphical interface made it possible to solve this problem - to make fonts extensible.

There are a few things to note about font sizes in Windows. The easiest way to adjust the size is in applications specifically designed for displaying text. Examples of such applications are text editors and other office suite programs. Changing the desktop font or the size of letters in application windows is not so easy.

True, you can install a Windows theme that displays large fonts, but this is a half-hearted solution. Increasing the font size may be necessary for people with not very good eyesight, and using a magnifying glass for viewing is extremely inconvenient. The advent of high-resolution monitors made watching movies more comfortable, but hardly improved the desktop experience.

The letters on the desktop began to look too small. This note is written specifically to teach you how to manipulate these dimensions.

So, how to increase the font size on a Windows 7 computer?

Two ways to increase size

The first method allows you to enlarge the desktop font and labels under shortcuts. How to adjust the size using it? This is done like this:

If for some reason none of the proposed options suits you, then try another method. In the left pane of the same screen properties window there is the inscription “Other font size”. Click on this inscription and you will see another size selection window, like this.
