Internet Explorer is the default Internet browser built into Windows OS. Therefore, it is installed simultaneously with the system. However, sometimes it may fail and an error message may appear. Problems occur for various reasons, and some may depend on the version of Internet Explorer.

Problems installing Internet Explorer 8

If an error occurs when installing version 8 of the browser, then first you should turn to the simplest methods to resolve it. So, first of all, you can try to set the default security settings. You can do this automatically using the Microsoft Fix it utility. You can restore the settings yourself via the command line.

If the steps taken did not help, then you should try checking your computer for malware; read about this in more detail here. To do this, you must first update the antivirus that you will use. After checking, try installing the application again. If the error still occurs, you can try disabling your antivirus and antispyware software. Before doing this, make sure that the Windows Firewall is running so as not to leave your computer completely vulnerable.

When Internet Explorer 8 has been installed, but does not start, you should take a few simple steps to diagnose problems. First, go to the Start menu and run the Run command. In the field, enter iexplore about:blank. If the browser opens after this action, then the problem is with the home page. You can fix it by going to the Tools menu of your Internet browser and changing the page.

If this does not help, you will need to check your user account. To do this, just log in under another entry and see if the problem is fixed. If you don't have it, then you can quickly. If the browser still does not start, check for plugins and add-ons. You need to go to Add-ons and go to the menu that allows you to view and install Internet Explorer add-ons.

Installing Internet Explorer 9 and older versions

When you install Windows, the ninth version of the browser is also installed automatically. Browser components and add-ons may vary depending on the operating system you are using. If some of them are not installed automatically, then the installation of Internet Explorer 9 will also not be completed. Then you will need to find and manually install the necessary components.

Before you do this, you should make sure that no other add-ons are downloaded. The fact is that Internet Explorer 9 does not install its software until the installation of other updates is completed or if the computer is waiting to restart. In order to make sure whether the process is running, you need to go to the Update Center. Start installing Internet Explorer 9 only after all steps are completed. Also restart your computer first.

Internet Explorer 10 is not compatible with devices that have a hybrid graphics card. Before starting the installation, you will need to download drivers for correct operation. The browser version also requires updates. Usually they are downloaded automatically by the Internet browser if there is access to the network.

During the installation process, it is recommended to close all active windows on your computer. In reality, problems usually don't occur often. If all of the above methods for resolving the error do not help, you may need to contact a service center.

The other day I came across an interesting task, namely the need to install Internet Explorer 11 on a computer with the Windows 7 operating system. To some, such a task will seem trivial, to others - outdated (who is still fiddling with Windows 7 when they have already had Windows for a long time 10), and to some it’s generally strange: they say, who in their right mind uses the Internet Explorer browser? Therefore, I will give a couple of explanations.

Firstly, the task is truly banal, but only until an inexplicable error occurs during its execution, which prevents you from performing such a seemingly elementary action as installing a different version of the program.

Secondly, Windows 7 is still a very popular and fairly widespread version of the operating system from Microsoft, and in many cases it simply cannot be replaced with something newer. There are a great many reasons for this, but this is not what this article is about, so I won’t go deeper.

Thirdly, the Internet Explorer browser is used, and very actively. By the way, statistics also testify to this. True, in many cases its use is forced, since the developers of various application programs and Internet sites simply do not provide users with any other choice. In this case, we are talking about programs that are mandatory for use by individual entrepreneurs and legal entities. Alas, you can submit mandatory reports or perform other necessary operations on the websites of the Federal Social Protection Fund, the Ministry of Taxes, the ESChF, the Ministry of Labor, Belstat and other similar organizations only through a single browser, and that is Internet Explorer. Moreover, the web clients of some of our banks use technologies that are applicable only in Internet Explorer (however, sometimes with the help of various tricks you can make them work in other browsers).

In this case, the need to install Internet Explorer 11 was caused by the need to use the online version of the electronic respondent website of the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus, better known as Belstat. This service simply refuses to work with any browser other than Internet Explorer version 11 or later. So put aside your Macs, erase your Linuxes, throw away the old junk with Windows XP on board and welcome to the realities of the IT country.

Now to the point. Windows 7 in the 64-bit edition and Internet Explorer 8 were installed on the computer. Even a schoolchild can download and run the offline installer of the 11th version of IE, so no problems were expected. During the process, the installer found and applied the necessary system updates, after which it reported that the installation was successful and asked to restart the computer. When you rebooted, the usual messages about applying updates appeared, but after a few minutes (alas, Windows has never been known for its speed of installing updates), the system suddenly reports that the updates could not be applied and begins to roll back the changes made. This takes another five minutes, after which the computer reboots in its previous state with the old version of IE. As a result, 20 minutes have already been lost, and the result is zero.

Since the automatic installation did not work, it means that we must try to resolve the situation manually. As you know, installing IE requires several system updates. The list of required updates for IE 11 is on the Microsoft website. In addition, you should ensure that the system meets the minimum requirements. In my case, there were no problems with the minimum requirements, but the updates were, indeed, almost all missing.

Of course, the installer downloads and applies the necessary updates itself, but as we see, it is not always successful. Therefore, the next step was to manually install the required updates from the list. I decided not to install the optional ones to save time. All updates were installed without problems, the reboot went smoothly, after which the IE 11 installer was launched again. Alas, the picture was repeated completely: installation, report of successful completion, reboot, application of updates, message about impossibility of application, rollback of changes, reboot, initial state. Another minus half an hour of work, taking into account the manual installation of updates.

What to do? I also decided to install the recommended updates, despite the fact that the infamous KB2882822 was among them. Why infamous? Because this is one of the few updates that can make the system inoperable. In particular, after installing KB2882822, you can get a situation where any application (more precisely, if I remember correctly, any 32-bit application) causes system error 0xC0000005 when launched. This situation does not occur on all computers, but quite often. Judging by publications on the Internet, the problem occurs on 64-bit systems, on computers equipped with AMD processors or video cards, as well as on unlicensed versions of Windows. However, having a license is also not a guarantee that the system will work after installing this update.

So, after installation and reboot, almost as expected, I receive error messages 0xС0000005 when launching any programs. It’s good that this problem can be solved quite simply: you just need to remove the problematic update. This can be done through the Control Panel (Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View installed updates -> find and remove update 2882822) or through the command line with the command

Wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:2882822

After that, we reboot and get a working system back. By the way, there are other updates that often cause the system to crash, for example: KB2859537, KB2872339, KB971033.

Having removed the problematic update and left the two recommended ones, I ran the IE installer again. True, before this I turned off the Internet so that the installer would not try to download the missing update. Unfortunately, the trick was unsuccessful; without the Internet, the installer refused to work. Next, I started poking around in the installer itself. It turned out that it still checks for the presence of installed update 2882822, and if it is missing, it downloads and tries to install. If the download fails, then IE refuses to install. Note that this update is listed on the Microsoft website as recommended, but not required for installing IE 11.

Time was running out, so I decided on one last experiment with the intention of leaving and looking for a solution the very next day if nothing worked out now. The experiment was as follows:

  1. I manually installed the KB2882822 update.
  2. Without rebooting (this is important), I installed Internet Explorer 11.
  3. Without rebooting again, I deleted the KB2882822 update through the Control Panel.
  4. Closed all applications and gave the shutdown command.
  5. Without waiting for a complete shutdown (there was a splash screen on the screen about preparing to shutdown), I turned off the computer by holding the power button (if anyone doesn’t know, hold it for at least 4 seconds).
  6. I turned on the computer and when asked to select a boot option after a failure, I chose a normal boot.
  7. I waited until all the updates were applied.
  8. I received a working system with Internet Explorer version 11 installed and without the KB2882822 update.

Next, all that remains is to configure IE to work with the Belstat website. We also had to reconfigure the browser to work with the portals of the Federal Social Security Service and the Ministry of Taxation. Everything was configured using scripts from the corresponding sites, so it took almost no time. The bank's web client started working without additional settings. The subsequent operation check was successful.

As a result, about 2 hours of time were spent on all this fuss with a seemingly primitive task. Most of them are waiting for updates to be applied and rollbacks to the previous state during reboots. I note that situations where it is impossible to install or update Internet Explorer occur frequently and for various reasons. Therefore, the proposed algorithm of actions may not help. Moreover, the described sequence of actions may make it impossible to boot the system! So if you decide to follow it at your own peril and risk, consider all the possible consequences.

According to information on the Internet, in some cases it helps to update the version of IE by first manually removing the installed version and then installing a new one. There are other options offered, but I haven’t tried them, so I won’t list them here. After all, today finding information on the Internet is not a problem. Good luck to all!

P.S. Further experiments showed that steps 5-6 do not need to be completed. Everything works fine after a normal reboot. Only once did I have to turn it off forcibly due to freezing during preparation for shutdown.
