“Lore” says that initially the developers planned to create a Fallout-style game with the same depressing atmosphere, but plans changed and a crazy one was born.

Wasteland 2

The plot takes place in the middle of the 21st century, in a world that has survived a nuclear war between superpowers. Alarmed by intercepted radio transmissions, General Vargas, the head of the Desert Rangers, sends one of his best fighters, Ace, with the task of tracking down the source of the signals. A few days later, the veteran was found dead, and a detachment was sent to investigate under our strict leadership.

A noteworthy fact here is that the head of the inXile Entertainment studio responsible for creating the game is Brian Fargo, a famous game designer and author of... the very first Fallout, which was initially similar to the first part of Wasteland. So it's not really surprising that Wasteland 2's gameplay borrows heavily from classic Fallout titles and its tactical spinoff, Fallout Tactics.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (game series)

Fallen: A2P Protocol

Technically, this game is more like XCOM, but in its post-apocalyptic spirit it is pure Fallout. Here you have the Wasteland, and moving around it by car, here you have caravaners and raiders and, of course, a proprietary character creation system with recognizable skills. The battles are turn-based, the weapons, as expected, are all completely rusty and very original. A machine gun assembled from an electric drill, a blender and a meat grinder is a classic example of what you can use to fight off enemies. Unfortunately, the plot will not surprise you with anything special, optimization, it seems, will continue to limp on both legs, and the enemy will remain with the intelligence of an autistic zombie.

Wasteland 2

And again the Wasteland, only this time, as it were, in a different universe: one that is younger than Mad Max, but much older than Fallout. Here you are offered a dangerous journey as part of an entire combat group, where one can talk, another can hack, and the third can shoot. Unlike the previous game, here battles do not decide everything, and many achievements are obtained using completely civilian specialties. The battles are turn-based, the leveling is classic, there are a lot of dialogues. Everything we love. However, until Fallout this game is like the sky. The wasteland is linear, you can’t move wherever you want. You won’t be able to complete it with just one character even on the easiest difficulty. Because he is alone, he will not level up faster, gaining experience from his non-existent colleagues. Overall, mediocre. But it’s still interesting how the third part will turn out.

Edge of the World

A game from Ukrainian developers who didn’t even try to hide the fact that they were inspired by Fallout. True, despite this, the voice acting here is only in English, for which the authors of the project have a big minus. Otherwise, everything is as it should be: turn-based battles, the world is open, there is recruitment of allies, a lot of weapons and armor. The name of the game, by the way, contains the word Crimea, but the game has nothing in common with this peninsula except a map and coastal locations: everything is foreign, and if you don’t know, you might think that the whole thing is happening somewhere in California. It’s probably not even worth listing the disadvantages of the project: everything is already clear. They did it as long as they had enough money.

Fall: Last Days of Gaia

When talking about games like this, it is customary to use the term “was”: here, there was such a game. And indeed, the release dates back to 2004: serious age. However, Gaia still retains a certain playability to this day, just as her few fans retain hope for a sequel. At its time, this particular project from German developers was considered the best thing that could be recommended to a Fallout fan. You are a simple person whose house was burned by raiders from the Wasteland. And, harboring anger in your heart, you enroll in the government service of bounty hunters, who, as part of combat groups, are engaged in shooting everything that violates the local law. The battles here, however, are not classic turn-based, but with an active pause mode.

Gorky 17

A legendary hit of its time, created in the unique atmosphere of the early 2000s, when the domestic game industry was on a sharp rise, and when our developers did not hesitate to make games with a truly domestic flavor. The battles here are turn-based, although there is a plot, it is strictly linear, and in general the world is very reminiscent of a cartoon quest series about Vasily Ivanovich and Petka, only in the style of hard horror with gameplay that is unforgiving of mistakes. The battles here are very difficult, requiring serious thought and great conservation of ammunition, which came into sharp contrast with the cheerful dialogues of the characters, creating the impression of an easy walk with simply shooting everything that moves. Unfortunately, the project, although it left its mark on history, did not become a TV series, remaining one of the under-realized gaming symbols of those years.

Atom RPG

And another domestic game, which is still in early access, and which, despite its deep indie status, is surprisingly a fairly high-quality reincarnation of Fallout in the atmosphere of Stalker. It's the alternative 80s. The Soviet Union did not collapse, so it urgently had to be bombed. Ours responded in kind, and as a result, a nuclear post-apocalypse set in across the entire planet, which we love, but which we really wouldn’t want to experience in real life. It has everything that Fallout has, and even more: a rotating camera and a unique Russian flavor, with vodka, condensed milk, Kalashnikovs and earflaps. In a word, an excellent game that everyone who cannot imagine life without the Wasteland should definitely join.

Shadowrun Returns

Perhaps this game is really very similar to Fallout, but with one serious nuance: the world here is cyberpunk, not classic post-apocalyptic, and the main character is not looking for noble deeds. He is a simple mercenary who lives from what he receives for completed contracts. Now he needs to unravel a strange murder, which eventually turns into a full-scale action-packed story. The Shadowrun games are unique. You either don’t like them right away, or they grab you firmly and forever. And if it were not for the rustic battles, in which there was no room for special tactical research, the game could be safely recommended. And so - for an amateur who has a lot of free time.

Coyotes. Law of the Desert

Another veteran game from domestic game makers. Classic isometrics, classic Wasteland, classic relationships between survivors: kill first so they don’t kill you. But, however, what separates this game from the title of a complete copy of Fallout is its automobile component: the battles here, and indeed all the actions of the heroes, take place in cars. Funny cars roam around the post-nuclear desert, staging colorful shootouts with an emphasis on real-time strategy mechanics. The game is made with love and attention to detail, and, yes, there is Russian-language voice acting.

UnderRail

This game has passed over many fans of isometric RPGs because it only has English. However, due to the fact that the project turned out to be original, amateurs translated it as best they could, making the translation publicly available. Otherwise, this is a serious role-playing game about survival underground after a nuclear war. It is distinguished by an abundance of dialogues, turn-based, tactical battles and a lack of leniency towards those who have not leveled up properly. If you invest your earned points in the wrong place, you risk ruining the entire campaign. One of the absolute minuses is the graphics, from low-poly, quickly turning into pixelated ones.

Dungeon Orderlies

The legendary Orderlies could become one of the best games of our time, reaching some heights at the level of the third Witcher. However, it didn’t work out. Then, when the game came out, and it was 2006, it was not accepted to pay for digital products, piracy was widespread, and the developers from 1C, having invested considerable funds, it seems that they could not make money, well, or they could, but not much. However, the game turned out to be excellent: events develop on a prison planet, where notorious criminals are exiled, and the main character, as part of a sabotage and reconnaissance group, needs to discover and destroy the spaceship on which the prisoners are planning to escape. In some ways, this game is much cooler than Fallout. Not least because of its “Russian” atmosphere. This is real domestic science fiction, which, unfortunately, could not, and is now rapidly aging in the vain hope of acquiring a new part or, at least, a remake.

Rage

Well, where are the games similar to Fallout after the reboot - you ask, and you will be right, because for a modern, young gamer, this universe is associated primarily with a first-person view and three-dimensionality. Unfortunately, we don't have complete copies of Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4, but there are several shooters that are very similar. For example, Rage, and especially Rage 2, which has not yet been released, but is already pleased with news about the open world, vibrant battles and an interesting plot. If you, wanting to prepare for the sequel, decide to play the original, you will get a large, albeit corridor, post-apocalyptic world, a pretty good plot, the opportunity to drive the local Pepelats like a breeze, and also, of course, shoot hundreds of dangerous and evil marauders of all stripes. Not a masterpiece, but very similar to Fallout.

Mad Max

To be honest, this Fallout is similar to Mad Max, because the story of Mad Max began with the premiere of the film of the same name back in 1979, which, in fact, was where the guys who founded the Black Isle studio grew up, where the best post-apocalyptic films were created in the past. RPG of all times and peoples. However, Mad Max 2015, although it did not become a masterpiece, also turned out to be quite good: a huge, partially limited world, colorful enemies, battles in the style of Batman - Arkham Knight, protracted and interesting car battles and chases, as well as a bright main character, albeit and looking more like Nathan Drake than Mel Gibson. In short, despite the third-person view, the game, it seems to me, is quite capable of entertaining a bored New Vegas fan.

Metro 2033

Well, we end with the most successful part of the world-famous series about terrible adventures in the post-apocalyptic Moscow metro, where, after the nuclear end of times, a bizarre, multi-class and motley society, like a grandmother’s blanket, begins to emerge. In essence, this is a classic first-person shooter without any special role-playing elements, except for numerous quests from various NPCs. This game is much more similar to Fallout than STALKER, which, it seems to me, is not similar to Fallout at all. And if you add the V.A.T.S turn-based aiming system, and equip the character with a classic pumping system, then you get, no matter what, Fallout: New Moscow, which could turn out to be a very powerful answer to Bethesda.

The first part, released in 1997 Fallout made a splash among fans of the RPG genre. They were waiting for her, they wanted her, they raved about her. Revolutionary role-playing system S.P.E.C.I.A.L. set fashion in the gaming industry for many years. And a huge post-apocalyptic world, with dozens of characters and hundreds of quests, completely immersed the player in the atmosphere of a hopeless future for humanity.

The second part of the series, as expected, surpassed the first project in popularity, despite the fact that the engine and gameplay have not undergone changes. Thanks to the expansion of the game world of the wasteland and careful development of the plot, the developers were admired until 2008 - that is, until the release.

The third part retained the core of the previous games, using the same role-playing system and epic surroundings. However, the gameplay has changed beyond recognition. Instead of the usual isometric 2D world, the developers presented a 3D first-person game. As Fallout fans themselves said: “We got a great game, but not a very successful sequel.”

The success of the Fallout series did not go unnoticed by other representatives of the industry, which gave rise to a number of quite successful imitators. So, what are they games similar to Fallout worthy of gamer respect? Who managed to come even one iota closer to the level of popularity of the legendary series?!

The Fall: Last Days of Gaia

Released in 2004, The Fall: Last Days of Gaia, a mixture of tactical strategy and role-playing game, can easily be called the successor to Fallout. Thanks to colorful graphics, the developers managed to achieve maximum immersion of the player in the post-nuclear atmosphere. And the introduction of a crafting system into the game diversified the gameplay in the best possible way.

However, a large abundance of bugs, critical errors and crashes of this games similar to Fallout, almost canceled out all the efforts of the developers to create a unique product. So, only after the third official patch the game was brought to a more or less playable state.
