NETWORK HARDWARE

There are two types of network equipment:

■ Active network equipment - equipment that is capable of processing or converting information transmitted over the network. Such equipment includes network cards, switches, routers.

■ Passive network equipment - equipment used to transmit signals at the physical level. These are network cables, connectors, repeaters and signal amplifiers. The main elements of active equipment used to build a network are switches and routers.

One of the important characteristics of a switch is the number of ports. This determines how many network devices can be connected to it.

To determine what maximum speed a single switch port can provide, you need to find the “switch fabric bandwidth” parameter, say 32 Gbps, and divide it by the number of ports (16) multiplied by 2. For example: 32 / (2 x 16 ) = 1 Gbit/s.

Now in the menu on the left, activate the “Calls” item, click on the “Open additional settings” button located in the window on the right. In the “Receive calls” field, select “only from my contacts” and check the remaining boxes so that the video broadcast will automatically start as soon as you call your additional account. Advanced users also suggest the following option: install a terminal server on the computer with the camera (to peep unnoticed, i.e. if someone is working on the computer, so as not to be “thrown out”), connect the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and use any program that works with the camera. .

The simplest option for using “IP Webcam” from a computer is as follows: launch the browser and enter the IP address and port of the device in the address field. For example, on my home Wi-Fi network, the link looked like this: “http://192.168.4.6:8080/”, where 192.168.4.6 is the phone’s IP address, displayed on the display of the mobile device after starting the broadcast.

There are several possible ways to watch the broadcast. The simplest is to use a computer browser. While testing the application on my computer, it turned out that allowing the JAVA plugin to run was sufficient. Moreover, in the future you can allow the launch of this plugin without additional requests. If the plugin is missing, you can download it from the hyperlink displayed on the “Smartphone Camera Service” page. It also contains the settings necessary for watching video and listening to audio in any third-party application. The resulting network topology is presented in Figure 8. We see that with an estimated load created by video cameras on one port of 8.14 Mbit/s, the actual scheme allowed us to get exactly the same flow on one port - 8.14 Mbit/s.

In the considered example, ports for connecting servers, NAS drives and workstations of video surveillance post employees were not taken into account.

DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICAL NETWORK TOPOLOGY

The physical topology of the network is strictly connected with the installation locations of video cameras and the routes for laying cable communications to the server room or monitor security post. In this regard, the physical topology of the network begins to be designed using a floor plan or a site plan, where the installation locations of video cameras are indicated.

The main problems that arise in the process of developing a physical topology are the following:

■ The length from the camera to the switch exceeds the permissible distances of 80-100 meters.

■ PoE is limited over long distances or the network does not support PoE.

If the length from the camera to the switch is more than 80-100 meters, first of all, you need to try to group the cameras according to the principle of the minimum distance to the active equipment locations or move the active equipment to another place, closer to the video cameras.

If it is impossible to solve the problem in this way, you need to use special devices that allow you to increase the distance from the camera to the active equipment. Depending on the distance over which you want to increase the signal transmission, you can use fiber optic cable inserts and RF shielded cable inserts.

One of the viewing options is to use a video player that supports video streaming, for example, the free VLC player recommended by the authors. Moreover, everything is quite automated - when you click on the “view in external player” hyperlink, an m3u file will be downloaded to your computer, which can simply be opened with the player.

To connect an IP camera to Skype or other applications that work with web cameras, you will need to install the appropriate drivers on your computer. This operation is described in sufficient detail on the “Connect to a Windows computer for use with video chats” page (the link to it is on the “Smartphone Camera Service” start page). I would like to note that everything actually works quite correctly, but for compatibility with Skype 5.x I had to install the “IP Camera Adapter”. Also, using the appropriate links in the web interface, you can take a full-size photo and upload the current video frame as a picture. An interesting feature of “tinyCam Monitor” is viewing pictures from random public cameras. And it is convenient enough to evaluate the capabilities of the application. In the settings for recording images from the camera (available in the paid version) to a memory card, ftp or cloud services, you can set the frame rate and limit the maximum amount of space occupied (for an SD card). Another useful feature of the pro version is the ability to scan cameras available on the network. Recommendations for setting up “tinyCam Monitor” for using a software web camera created using “IP Webcam” are given on the start page of the web interface of the software camera. Consider an example of building an information network topology for 49 IP video cameras with a frame size of 1920x1080:

■ Set the frame rate and codecs used for each camera. Frame rate - 24 fps. Codec - H.264. We will assume that the selected parameters are the same for all cameras.

■ From Table 1 we find that for the given parameters the flow rate from one camera is 6.51 Mbit/s.

■ The total stream from 49 video cameras is 49 x 6.51 = 318.99 Mbit/s. Taking into account a 25% margin for unforeseen changes in traffic intensity in front of the video cameras, the total flow is 318.99 x 1.25 = 398.74 Mbit/s.

■ The switch port to which the video camera is connected must provide a flow rate of at least 398.74 Mbit/s / 49 = 8.14 Mbit/s.

■ We build the network on twisted pair cable UTP Cat.6 with a maximum speed of 1000 Mbit/s. Taking into account 80% of the network load from the maximum value, the permissible flow is 1000 Mbit/s 0.8 = 800 Mbit/s. The total stream from all cameras (398.74 Mbps) does not exceed the maximum speed in the UTP Cat.6 cable (800 Mbps). Consequently, the video surveillance system will operate on one physical network without creating additional subnets.

What is important is that the Ivideon service is free for personal use, and the minimum configuration required to work with it is a computer with Internet access, the Ivideon Server application installed and a web camera connected to it. Moreover, the service developers offer branded IP cameras, where Ivideon support is integrated into the software. The free version of the service is limited to 1 video server “Ivideon Server” with two connected cameras or 1 IP camera. A static external IP address is not required to use the service.

Registration with Ivideon is quite simple - just enter your email address and enter the desired password to access your personal account. After registration, the required instance of “Ivideon Server” (or an IP camera that supports the service) is “linked” to your personal account. At this point, the setup is complete and you can proceed to viewing the recording, and even the archive is recorded on the Ivideon servers.

Finding out whether your IP address is fixed is not difficult: in the search bar of your browser, type “find out IP address” and go to the site based on the search results. Then you need to disconnect the Internet, connect it again (you can turn off and turn on the router) and determine your IP address again. If the address remains the same, then it is fixed.

If you plan to use a USB modem similar to a flash drive, then the default IP address of such a connection will be floating (dynamic). So, first of all, in order for you to have access to the video surveillance system via remote access, you need to configure the router correctly. Let's consider the most common connection method: Internet - router - DVR.


To provide network access to your recorder, you need to correctly forward the ports from the router to the recorder. Only one IP address is visible on the Internet - this is the external IP address of the router, which does not depend on the number of devices connected to it. And since the request from the external network goes first to the router, and then to the registrar, you need to tell the router which internal (local) IP address and which port (HTTP port number) to redirect the request to.

Find out the IP address of the local network

You can change the IP address of the camera using the same program through which you found it out. Hikvision, for example, calls it SADP; other cameras come with their own programs. After the camera’s IP address is brought into line with the local network address, the image from it will become available at the new IP address, in our case it is http://192.168.99.24.

Changing the camera's IP address via its web interface

There is another way to get into the camera’s web interface, which involves changing the IP address of the local network. For example, the IP address of our camera is 192.168.0.24, and the local network of the computer is 192.168.99.22, but we need the computer and the camera to work in the same subnet (.99. or.0.). To do this, let’s bring the local network subnet in line with the camera address, for example, change it to 192.168.0.22. To do this, go to the “Sharing and Network Center”, then in the “Connections” line, select the “Ethernet” or “Via Local Network” item. A window should appear, as in the screenshot below. In this window, click on the “Properties” button, then select “IP Protocol version 4 IPv4”, call up its properties, and manually enter the IP address 192.168.0.22, and specify the address of our IP camera 192.168.0.24 as the gateway. Don't forget to save the settings.

Now, through any browser, go to the device’s web interface - enter the camera address 192.168.0.24 in the search bar. If you did everything correctly, a window should open to enter your username and password, which we take from the camera instructions. Usually by default they are admin/admin, admin/12345, admin/00000000, and other easy combinations. After entering the data, you will be able to view the image from the camera, as well as configure the camera.

In the camera's web interface, you need to match the camera's IP address with the local network address. Typically these settings are located on a tab called “Network”. For example, your router is located at the local network address 192.168.99.22, which means that for the camera we need to set an IP something like this: 192.168.99.24. We put a tick in the IP settings for “Fixed IP address” - we will need it to configure it, and enter the data:

  • IP address: 192.168.99.24;
  • Subnet mask: standard 255.255.255.0;
  • Gateway (IP address where our router is located): 192.168.99.22;
  • DNS IP Address: 192.168.99.22.

If you do not want to view your cameras via the Internet, then simply check the box next to Dynamic IP (DCHP).

Now you need to assign a port to your camera. By default, port “80” is open, so if your camera does not have such settings, you must use it. If this line is available, we enter the values ​​manually for each camera. For the first, for example, let's set port 8081.

Save the settings, disconnect the camera’s network cable from the computer and insert it into a free port on the router. After this, we reset all the manual IP address settings that we previously made on the local network to connect to the camera’s web interface to automatic - we simply check the dots for obtaining the IP address and DNS addresses automatically, and connect the router to the computer’s network card. If necessary, log into the camera’s web interface through the router using the IP address assigned to it ( http://192.168.99.24), and set up a wireless connection via Wi-Fi. We make the same settings for each camera, and do not forget to assign different IP addresses and ports to all other devices, if this is permissible (on some cameras there is no provision for manually setting ports, for them it will be standard - “80”). For example, we will assign IP 192.168.99.25 to the second camera and port 8082, the third 192.168.99.26/8083, the fourth 192.168.99.27/8084, and so on.

Setting up a router to view IP cameras via the Internet

After setting up the cameras, it’s the router’s turn:

  1. We connect all configured cameras to the router via LAN network ports, or via Wi-Fi;
  2. We connect the router to the computer via Wi-Fi or a network cable;
  3. We go to its web interface and begin port forwarding so that the router, when accessing a specific address from the outside, knows which camera to issue from the internal network.

These settings can be located in sections called “Port Forwarding”, “Routing”, “WAN”, in the “Virtual Server” or “Virtual Server” tab. First, you need to check the box to activate the virtual server. Depending on the router model, you may come across similar settings:

  • Service name - enter manually, for example, “First camera”;
  • Port range - the port that we assigned in the settings of the first camera (8081);
  • Local IP address (IP camera address) - for example, we have it 192.168.99.24;
  • Local port - 8081, or 80 if the camera does not have port settings;
  • Protocol: TCP – the IP camera works with this protocol;
  • Protocol number: leave the field empty, or write any number, for example, 1.

Connecting and setting up an IP camera via a router

We prescribe the settings for each camera according to the above principle. Do not forget that each camera must have its own different IP address and port, if, of course, there is such a possibility.

To be able to connect to the cameras from any device with Internet access, you will need a static IP address. You can order it from your provider for a fee, or use the DynDNS service. Using this service, you can assign any domain name to your dynamic IP address, like http://your_unique_domain.ddns.ru. But first you need to activate this function in the router settings. In some routers, these settings are located in the “WAN” section on the “DDNS” tab. There you can specify the server (DynDNS, ASUS, NO-IP, etc.), your 3rd level domain name, and other necessary settings. Next, we register the domain name on the service (by the way, ASUS routers have their own free service for these needs), and register it in the router settings.

Checking functionality after setting up IP cameras

After setting up the IP cameras and router, let’s check their functionality. To do this, you need to open your browser and write the IP address of the camera and its port in the address bar in the following form: http://your_unique_domain.ddns.ru:8081, or http://your_static_IP_address:8081. When accessing the camera from your computer located on the same local network as the camera with a router, simply enter its unique IP address into the address bar.
