How to turn on Wi-Fi on a laptop. What to do if you reinstalled Windows and there is no WiFi network on your laptop

No sound on laptop, computer, computer- we shout. Of course, this problem is serious, because watching a movie, playing a game, listening to music without sound is like eating without food. It occurs quite often and there may be several reasons for this; we will consider them below:

1. There is no sound because the speakers are connected to the wrong jack

(if you have a desktop computer). To do this, you need to connect the speakers to the correct connector, green, and turn on the speakers accordingly.

2. There is no sound, because it is simply turned off (no matter how trite it sounds)

You just need to turn it on. There is (should be a column or speaker icon) in the lower right corner. If it is not there, most likely the drivers are not installed, go straight to step 5. Click on it and raise the slider to the end.

3. The slider is raised, the sound is on, but there is still no sound.

Most likely, especially if you have a laptop, another audio playback device is simply turned on. To do this, click on the icon in the lower right corner, then on “mixer”

We look at what device we have by default, there should be speakers (and your device). If not, then right-click on the icon in the lower right corner and select “playback devices”

Right-click on the device we need (usually speakers) and select use the default communication device. We save, close all applications (players, etc.) We try, it should appear.

4. There is no sound because your playback device is turned off in the system.

To enter the settings, right-click on the “my computer” icon and select “properties”, then “device manager”.

The “sound, video and gaming devices” tab displays all your audio devices that are responsible for sound. If they have a cross on them, it means they are turned off. You need to right click on device/properties/enable. As you can see in the image above I have two devices: one standard Realtek High Definition Audio, the second AMD High Definition Audio Device - additional - digital,
which transmits its signal via an HDMI cable. Such audio playback devices are most often found on laptops with discrete video cards, and on all computers with an HDMI output.
Very often there is no sound after connecting a laptop from HDMI to a regular 3.5 jack (the plug on all computer speakers) and vice versa. You need to delve into the above settings and you will see a miracle - the sound will work.

5. There is no sound because the drivers for the sound card on the laptop or computer are not installed.

Solution: if you have a laptop, no matter what brand (Asus, Toshiba, HP, LENOVO, DELL, SAMSUNG, etc.), write to Google, Yandex the request “download drivers for” the manufacturer of your laptop, computer, computer” Once on the manufacturer's page, go to the downloads and support section, select your model and operating system and download drivers for your sound card. Do you already have a laptop or are you just planning to buy one? Then it is advisable to think about connecting to the Internet, otherwise you will not be able to fully use the equipment. Downloading programs, updates, anti-virus databases, as well as movies and music is impossible without it. There are many ways to connect to the global network. Wired and wireless access is possible. Some of them do not require costs, while others require the purchase of auxiliary equipment. Let's look at how to connect a laptop to the Internet using all existing methods.

A modern laptop and a global network are one whole

Wired connection

Wired access is considered the most reliable and stable, and at the same time the least expensive. Just plug the cable into the connector on your laptop and make simple settings. Several technologies are used: optical cable and ADSL operating via telephone.

Cable

There are also several types of Internet connection. Each of them has slightly different settings.

Dynamic and static IP address

With a static IP, you need to enter the IP address, as well as the subnet mask, gateway and DNS server into the network card settings manually. With dynamic IP, all data is assigned by the operator, and you do not need to make additional settings.

A yellow sign should light up at the bottom of the screen when the cable is connected. Right-click and go to Network and Sharing Center - Change adapter settings. You will see an icon that says Ethernet or Local Area Network. Double click on the icon - Internet version 4 - Properties.

If the operator provides a dynamic address, specify automatic IP and DNS acquisition. When static, enter all the data specified in the contract. Click OK. Now the Internet will work and the yellow exclamation mark will disappear.

With this type, you only need to know your login and password. In the Network and Control Center, click on Create and configure a new connection - Internet connection - High-speed (with PPPoE). Type the username and password from the service agreement and come up with a name. If you enter all the data correctly, the connection will be established in a couple of seconds.

Subsequently, to connect, click on the network icon at the bottom of the screen and click “High-speed connection”. When using Windows 10, you will be redirected to the Dialer menu, where you can connect, change or delete the connection.

VPN over L2TP/PPTP

Some providers, for example, Beeline, connect their subscribers using VPN technology using the L2TP or PPTP standard. In the menu for creating a new connection, select Connect to a workplace - Use my Internet connection - Internet address, enter the data from the contract. Come up with a name, for example, the name of the provider, and click “Create”.

Now go to the menu for changing adapter parameters. Right-click on the name of your connection (the adapter will be called WAN miniport) - Properties - in “VPN Type” select the parameters recommended by the provider. We will connect from the networks menu by clicking on the name. If you have Windows 10, you will be redirected to the connection menu.

ADSL modem

ADSL access is not so popular. The signal comes from the telephone line, while the phone itself continues to work as usual. Connect the phone and modem to the splitter, which distributes the signal from the line, the modem with the second connector to the laptop, and then configure the connection on the computer. The procedure is no different from cable Internet.

The service provider will indicate the connection through which they provide wired Internet. Most often this is static IP or PPPoE. Use the previous paragraph to configure the modem.

Wireless connection

To get wireless access, you need to purchase a Wi-Fi router. Plug it into a power outlet, plug the Internet cable into the designated connector (it always differs in color). Next, enter the settings interface via Wi-Fi or cable. Information about login parameters is indicated on the router itself or in its instructions. Enter the IP address, login and password.

When you first connect, you will be prompted for a quick setup. Select your city and provider name and enter your connection details. If your provider is not in the list, check with them for the type of connection, select it in the network settings, enter the data, save and connect.

On your laptop, check for drivers for the Wi-Fi wireless module. This can be done through Device Manager. If the module works correctly, its name will be displayed in full. If the drivers are missing or installed incorrectly, there will be a yellow exclamation mark next to the name “Wireless Adapter”. You will need to download the driver for the Wi-Fi wireless module from the laptop manufacturer's website.

The Wi-Fi adapter must be turned on; it can be activated by pressing the key combination FN + F1–F12. You can find out more in the instructions for your laptop. In the right corner of the bottom of the screen you will see an Internet icon in the form of an antenna with a yellow star. Click on it, select your wireless network from the available connections, enter the password and click “Connect”.

mobile connection

When you do not have the opportunity to connect to a landline Internet, you can take advantage of the offer of mobile operators. The quality of these services is at a high level. In many cities, access speed is equal to home Internet. You can connect via a 3G modem, a mobile 3G router, and also use your phone as an access point.

3G modem

It looks like a flash drive into which a SIM card is inserted. When you connect for the first time, the system launches a program to set up the connection. If you purchased a modem from an operator’s official communication store, it will have a proprietary look and settings for working on the network of that particular company. With rare exceptions, you will not have to manually configure the settings. You will need to select a tariff, use the menu to activate the SIM card and the balance on it and connect. Subsequently, it will be enough to insert the modem into the laptop and click the “Connect” button in the program menu.

3G router

In terms of functionality, this is an ordinary router, but instead of a cable, a SIM card is inserted into it. Considering that most models have a built-in battery, you can distribute mobile Internet via Wi-Fi without being tied to a power cord. After inserting the SIM card, carry out the setup procedure as a regular router via the web interface.

Phone as access point

Another simple option is to use an Android or iOS phone as a modem. Just activate the item in the menu. You can read more about this method in our article “How to connect your tablet to the Internet.” However, please note that the phone's battery depletes very quickly. Therefore, it is advisable to connect it to a power source or connect it via USB.

Conclusion

Now you are familiar with all the ways to connect the Internet on your laptop. Setting it up via cable, Wi-Fi or modem is not difficult at all. All service providers try to make life as easy as possible for their users. Even if something doesn’t work out, you can call technical support.

Hello, Oleg Dmitrievich!

How to find out if your laptop has a built-in WiFi adapter?

The easiest way is if there is a sticker on the case of your laptop under the keyboard that lists the main characteristics. If the sticker lists Wi-Fi or Wireless 802.11 among other characteristics, most likely the required adapter is present in the laptop. The main thing is that there is no asterisk (*) next to this inscription, indicating that the device is installed optionally, i.e. it may not exist at all.

When the laptop is turned on, and there is this icon in the tray (lower right corner of the desktop): if the WiFi module is active, a message may appear above the icon: “Wireless networks are available within range.” The picture is typical for the Windows XP operating system. On other versions of Windows the icon is different.

If in Windows Device Manager in the Network Cards section there is a device whose name mentions WiFi, Wirelles or 802.11, then your laptop is equipped with everything necessary to connect to a WiFi network.

What should you do if your laptop doesn’t have a built-in module, but you really want to use convenient wireless Internet?

There are 2 solutions:

First. Buy a USB WiFi adapter and connect it to your laptop. The disadvantage of this solution is the module sticking out of the USB connector, the size of a flash drive. The cost of such an adapter is on average 500 - 1500 rubles.

Second. Install the internal WiFi module in your laptop at a service center. The cost of this procedure can be about 1200 rubles. What features might this solution have? If your laptop doesn't have a built-in WiFi antenna, installation costs and operating time may increase.

Let's start connecting to the network

Make sure that the WiFi module is turned on - press the WiFi enable button or move the slider to the “ON” position. We also make sure that the driver is installed for it (there is no yellow question mark next to the device in Windows Device Manager).

If a WiFi management utility is installed (for example, Intel or Atheros), look for “Use Windows to configure the network” in its settings and select this option.

If you are within range of wireless networks, a pop-up message will appear in the lower right corner notifying you of this. By clicking on the message, the following window will open. If there is no pop-up message, look for the wireless connection icon in the tray and double-click on it.

Select the name of the network you need and click “Connect”. If the network is marked with a lock (Secure Wireless Network), then you must enter a password to connect.

When the connection is successful, the wireless network icon in the lower right corner lights up blue (for Windows XP), and a pop-up message notifies you about the connection speed and signal strength.

If you want to organize wireless Internet at home, you need to buy and configure a wireless router. You can also inquire about the availability of wireless Internet services from Internet providers in your area. In this case, there is no need to purchase a router.

Many modern laptop models are equipped with built-in Bluetooth adapters. Thanks to this, you can easily exchange files, for example, with a mobile phone. But sometimes it turns out that Bluetooth on a laptop does not work. In this article, I would like to dwell on the main reasons for this, and analyze possible solutions so that you can quickly restore the functionality of your laptop.

The article is primarily aimed at novice users.

1. Decide on the laptop: does it support it, what buttons to turn it on, etc.

The first thing you need to do is make sure that Bluetooth is present on this particular laptop. The thing is that even in the same line of models there can be different configurations. Therefore, be sure to pay attention to the sticker on the laptop, or the documents that came with it (I, of course, understand - it sounds funny, but when you come at a “tearful” request and help set up your friends’ computer, but it turns out there is no such opportunity there... ).

Example. In the laptop documentation, look for the “communications” section (or something similar). In it, the manufacturer clearly indicates whether the device supports Bluetooth.

Also take a closer look at the laptop keyboard - especially the function keys. If the laptop supports Bluetooth, there should be a special button with a characteristic logo.

Aspire 4740 laptop keyboard.

By the way, the reference manual for a laptop always indicates the purpose of the function keys. For example, for an Aspire 4740 laptop, to turn on Bluetooth, you need to click on Fn+F3.

Aspire 4740 Reference Guide.

Also pay attention to the taskbar, on the right side of the screen next to the clock, the Bluetooth icon should be lit. This icon can be used to turn Bluetooth on and off, so be sure to check that as well.

2. How to find and update drivers to enable Bluetooth

Very often, when reinstalling Windows OS, Bluetooth drivers are lost. That's why it doesn't work. Well, by the way, the system itself can tell you about the lack of drivers when you press the function keys or the tray icon. The best thing is to go to the task manager (you can open it through the control panel: just type “manager” into the search bar and the OS itself will find it) and see what it tells us.

Particular attention should be paid to the yellow and red icons near Bluetooth devices. If you have the same picture as in the screenshot below, update your drivers!

This OS does not have Bluetooth drivers. You need to find and install them.

How to update drivers?

1) It is better to use the official website of the laptop manufacturer, which is listed in your reference manual. There probably is a better version of the driver, tested by hundreds of users around the world. But sometimes it’s not possible to do this: for example, you changed the OS, but there is no driver for that OS on the website; or simply the download speed is very low (I personally encountered it when downloading drivers for Acer: it turned out that downloading a 7-8 GB file from a third-party site was faster than 100 MB from the official one).

2) The second option is suitable if the official drivers are not satisfactory for you. By the way, I’ve been using this option lately for its speed and simplicity! After reinstalling the OS, just run this package (we are talking about DriverPack Solution) and after 15 minutes. We get a system that has absolutely all the drivers for all devices installed in the system! For all the time I have been using this package, I can only remember 1-2 cases when the package was unable to find and identify the driver correctly.

It is considered that after purchase a new laptop or computer is ready for use. In practice, this is not true, and there are a number of steps you need to take before you start using your new laptop.

Laptop setup

Our readers often send us questions: I bought a new laptop and what to do next, where to start, how to set up a new asus laptop, how to set up a new lenovo laptop, how to set up a new acer laptop, how to set up a new hp laptop. The procedure for setting up a new laptop is the same and does not depend on the manufacturer. It is worth noting that it is more profitable to purchase a new laptop with a pre-installed operating system, rather than purchasing a laptop and the Windows operating system separately. In addition to the fact that buying a laptop without an operating system and Windows separately will cost more, you may have to use the services of a specialist to install the operating system on the laptop.

Create an account

When you turn on your laptop for the first time on the Windows operating system, when entering settings, the system will ask you to set a username and password. It is not necessary to create a password; if you do not create it, you will be able to log into the computer without a password. If a password was not created upon first launch, it can be created if necessary in the User Accounts section. You should not expect that the password will reliably protect against unauthorized access to the laptop; it will not be difficult for a specialist to quickly reset the Windows login password and gain access to the system. We wrote about this on our website in the article How to reset a password on Windows. A password for the account will help limit access to the laptop for children and not very advanced computer users. To reliably restrict access to a laptop, you need to use more complex settings and special tools.

Partitioning the hard drive

If your new laptop only has one partition that contains both the operating system and data, it needs to be divided into two partitions. This may be useful in the future if you need to reinstall the operating system. When you reinstall the operating system, all user data on the disk on which the operating system is installed will be destroyed. If the data is placed on another drive (after the hard drive is partitioned), it will be preserved after reinstalling the operating system. In Windos 8 and Windows 10, you can partition your hard drive in several ways.

Standard Windows tools. To open the Disk Management tool, press Win+X and select Disk Management from the menu that appears. Shrink your volume (using the right mouse button, click shrink volume) and create a new partition on the free disk space. We recommend leaving the system partition at least 100 GB.

Using third party programs. There are many programs, both free and paid, for partitioning a hard drive, as well as other hard drive management actions. We recommend EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition. The program is free for home use, there is no Russification, the program is in English. When partitioning a hard drive, you need to be very careful and careful. Manufacturers often create hidden partitions on the hard drive where they place a backup copy of the operating system. You can accidentally delete hidden partitions and be left without a system backup. Also, if the hard drive is not used correctly, system areas may be deleted and Windows may not boot.

Removing trial versions (trial) and unnecessary programs on a laptop

Laptop manufacturers make additional money by installing trial versions of various programs. This is often how antivirus programs and the Microsoft office suite are installed. After some time, the program stops working and begins to “ask for money,” offering to purchase the full version. If you do not plan to purchase these programs, it is better to remove them immediately. Each user has programs that he is used to using and trusts. It is better to immediately purchase and install the required paid and free software.

We often receive questions about what programs should be removed from a new laptop or computer. As a rule, laptop manufacturers install a trial version of an antivirus program, which stops updating, and sometimes even working, 30-45 days after launching the antivirus program. Many users are unaware of this and after some time remain without antivirus protection. If you do not plan to purchase an installed antivirus, it is better to immediately uninstall it and install one of the free antiviruses, which provides basic protection against viruses. We have a review of free antiviruses on our website.

There may be many programs installed on a laptop, the purpose of which is unknown to the user. As a rule, most of them are trial versions and programs with limited functionality. To get information about the program, you can type its name in any search engine. After you have received information about the program, you can decide whether it is needed on the laptop. There is a rule that the fewer programs installed on a computer, the more stable it works. It’s better to immediately remove everything you don’t need and install what you need. There is a danger of overdoing it; you should not remove programs from the laptop manufacturer that can be used to update drivers on your laptop. There is an opinion that it is better to immediately reinstall the operating system and install the necessary drivers and programs from the laptop manufacturer’s website on a clean system.

Installing drivers and operating system updates

You must install all available operating system updates on your new laptop. Updates must be installed because they correct detected security problems, eliminate operational problems, and increase the stability and performance of the operating system. On the laptop manufacturer's website, in the support section for this model, you can download and install all the latest drivers and the latest BIOS version. Some laptop manufacturers install special programs with which you can download and install new device drivers.

Installing codecs and flash player to play all video and audio formats

On a new laptop, some video and audio formats are often not played by default; video and audio recordings may not be played on various sites, for example, VKontakte and Odnoklassniki. The solution to playing video and music on websites is to update your Internet browser to the latest version and install Adobe Flash Player and configure its automatic update. To play various video and audio formats on your computer, you need to install the K-Lite Codec Pack. Flash player and codecs can be downloaded from their official websites.

After setting up a new computer or laptop, you can install the necessary programs on it. We have an article on our website that talks about what free programs everyone might need. What programs are needed for a computer and laptop

If your computer or laptop is not working fast enough, on our website you can read Computer or laptop is slow, what to do
