Rostelecom Gpon technology - what you need to know. Fiber optics from the operator Rostelecom for home and apartment Fiber optics connection to a TV

It is difficult to imagine the life of a modern person without the Internet, and over the years, consumers of telecommunication services want to have a better high-speed connection. The West was the first to think about how to offer the population truly high-quality Internet that can satisfy even the most demanding customers. While many in Russia still had a vague idea of what the “World Wide Web” was, in England they were already talking about gigabit PON technology, or passive optical networks. In the Russian Federation, Rostelecom began implementing GPON, being the first to propose connecting three services at once using this innovative technology - Internet, interactive television and telephone.

After talking with neighbors and acquaintances who appreciated the quality of GPON technology from Rostelecom, many have no idea what they will have to deal with. Therefore, we will briefly explain what this technology is and what advantages it has. First of all, we note that this technology is passive, and in this case this means that there is no additional active equipment along the route of the optical Internet line from the service provider to the client.

It is impossible, of course, to say that there are no barriers at all, since direct laying of an expensive cable is very expensive, it’s just that in some places the signal is divided. For this, a special device is used - a splitter, or optical divider, which divides Rostelecom's optical fiber into several lines. The question remains unclear how such a long-awaited Internet will reach the end consumer, and what equipment is used for this.

Fiber Optic Equipment

To convert the signal into an understandable Ethernet interface, another unique device is used - ONT, or optical terminal. Devices of this type are presented in a wide range, and it can be either a standard device with two Ethernet ports and one PON port, or a full-fledged Rostelecom GPON router, which has a number of advantages in the form of:

  • four gigabit Ethernet ports;

Important! Ports zero and one are used exclusively for connecting high-speed Internet, and ports 3 and 4 are used for viewing IP television.

  • There are two connectors for IP telephony;
  • it is possible to connect interactive IPTV;
  • GPON signal distribution from Rostelecom is carried out via Wi-Fi (802.11n standard with a throughput of up to 300 megabits per second).

Users of the World Wide Web will no longer be surprised by a speed of 100 Mbit/second. Using Rostelecom's GPON equipment, Internet capabilities will soon be limited to gigabytes of information received per second. Only an optical cable can support such high speeds, especially when it comes to long distances of information transmission. Moreover, Rostelecom optics enter the apartment not through a copper cable, as is the case with the FTTH bandwidth, but by dividing the signal using a special optical splitter. After installing the modem, however, you will encounter the problem of setting it up. This is not difficult to do using our tips.

Setting up the modem

The equipment used by the telecommunications service provider is presented in a wide variety, but the first thing you will have to face in order to organize a high-quality fiber optic connection with Rostelecom is the choice of modem. Experts assure that one of the advantages of GPON technology is its versatility, and devices from any manufacturer of equipment in this series will work correctly in a fiber-optic system. Thus, the need to use rare, expensive equipment is eliminated, which can significantly reduce Internet costs. Anyone can set up a router for GPON from Rostelecom, following a certain sequence of actions.

As a rule, setting up equipment does not require special knowledge. At the same time, you don’t even have to configure the basic functions of the router, since the provider has already done this for you, but only if you bought the equipment at the Rostelecom office. If you bought the router yourself, you will have to search the Internet for detailed instructions on setting up the device, since the procedure differs depending on the manufacturer and model. You can check the modem settings in the web configuration, and for the RTK G PON ONT RFT620 ONT device, the most commonly used RTK, it looks like this:

  • in the address bar you need to enter the address 192.168.1.254;
  • In the window that opens, enter your data: username and password;
  • As for the network settings, you can only familiarize yourself with them, and you should not change the standard settings from the provider;
  • Next, we turn on the Wi-Fi module to the network;
  • change security settings;
  • set static or dynamic IP addresses.

Difficulties may arise if you use some models of routers with the ability to distribute Wi-Fi, for which you will have to configure the wireless network configuration. To set up a PPPoE connection, you will be prompted to enter the login and password provided when concluding the contract for the supply of services. Usually this does not take much time and everything happens without problems, but in some cases it is impossible to do without the intervention of the support service.

Technology advantages and possible speeds

There is no need to even say that the fiber-optic Internet provider Rostelecom has simply “outstanding” speed indicators - it’s hard to believe, but 1 Gbit/second is far from the limit. As for other advantages of “optics”, the following deserves special attention:

  • Installing fiber optic lines is much simpler, which installers have already appreciated - unlike old cables, the fiber optic in the apartment is no thicker than the refill of a ballpoint pen, and the cable is secured with self-adhesive clips, which do not spoil the appearance of the room and can be easily removed if necessary.

Remember! Despite the elasticity and strength, experts do not recommend bending at an angle of 90°, and this can be considered one of the disadvantages of the system. In the corners, a bend with a radius of 25-50 millimeters is allowed.

  • The fiber optic cable has a high degree of electrical safety; there is a risk of being harmed by laser radiation, but this can be avoided by not looking into the optical socket connector.
  • A GPON modem from Rostelecom is also a good energy saver, since the device is powered by a 12-volt element, and light costs are about 30 rubles. per month.
  • Versatility, since now you can enjoy high-quality digital fiber-optic television, use the Internet and Rostelecom telephone, and at the same time the apartment will not be cluttered with numerous cables and sockets.

Unfortunately, there is no eternal equipment and impeccable technology, and no one is immune from problems with fiber optic lines. The first thing you should pay attention to if the signal is lost is the terminal connection. Try connecting the cable directly, and if there is no power, contact a specialist. You can find out about the reasons for the shutdown and how to solve any problem from the technical service. To facilitate the resolution of many technical issues and to receive timely information support, Rostelecom specialists suggest creating a personal account on the service provider’s website. There you can find out the availability of funds in your account, change the tariff and pay for services.

GPON Internet tariffs

Prices are different for each region!

For many users, the issue of the cost of telecommunications services is far from idle, and in this regard, fiber optic tariffs from Rostelecom can be called “democratic”, given the range of services offered. The user, by the way, can choose the service himself: home Internet, television, landline or mobile phone, terminal rental, while you can order a separate service, or you can combine packages. The tariffs, in fact, depend on the range of offers, and, according to user reviews, they are affordable today. It is also worth remembering that prices for each region may differ, and on the official RTK website you can always find out about promotions and advantageous offers.

Citizens live both in their own or rented apartments, and in private houses. But everyone wants to get access to the global network in their home, which is currently necessary for work, study and leisure. For example, Internet from Rostelecom is provided via fiber optic, and connection to private houses and apartments is carried out everywhere. For residents of apartment buildings, the situation is simple. The provider lays the cable throughout the room, and then a connection is made based on an individual request. However, those who want to join the World Wide Web often have questions: what should owners of private sector residential premises do, how to install Internet from Rostelecom. This article will talk about this.

For owners and residents of the private sector, there are some difficulties in providing access to the global network. This is due to various factors. For example, a great distance from the nearest point of the provider or the lack of technical ability to connect.

A major provider of global network access services in our country is Rostelecom. It has been providing communications and telephone services to clients for a long time.

Rostelecom is able to implement this through its own resources. Technologies available to rural residents are xDSL or GPON. Let's take a closer look at the latter.

Gpon fiber optic

GPON is an abbreviation of the words Gigabit Passive Optical Network, which means “Passive Gigabit Optical Network” in English. Passivity is due to the inactivity of network equipment along the cable.

The cost of laying an optical cable is significantly higher than copper. Accordingly, the service provider tries to minimize costs. Rostelecom provides fiber-optic Internet to a private home according to the following principle. The cable is stretched to the nearest switch, and then there is a division by subscriber. At the entrance to the client’s apartment there is a special device - an optical router that converts the signal from the provider’s cable.

This is what the router looks like:

The router has two optical inputs and four Ethernet outputs. This is usually enough to provide Internet from Rostelecom to a private home.

The advantages of the technology include the following indicators:

  1. The optical cable is not affected by weather conditions.
  2. The data transfer speed compared to copper cable is increased tens of times.
  3. The lifespan of the optical fiber is unlimited.
  4. GPON guarantees stability when working with the World Wide Web.

This technology also uses wireless Internet from Rostelecom. To do this, the subscriber must have a router with Wi-Fi functionality. You can get it from your service provider or purchase it yourself.

Connection cost

Access to the global network via fiber is provided through optical network equipment. Such a device is quite expensive, but the provider already has ready-made solutions for subscribers, including renting a router. The cost depends on the region of residence of the client.

For example, the monthly tariff for the Moscow region with a connection speed of up to 100 MB/s is 500 rubles. In this case, the kit consists of a free Wi-Fi router from the provider company and Kaspersky Anti-Virus for one month.

This package also allows you to use Rostelecom’s interactive television, connected using IPTV technology. The option is available on any router when using an optical line from Rostelecom in a private home.

How to connect

In order to provide Internet from Rostelecom to a private home, you need to visit the company’s office, leave a request on the website or call the hotline. The provider will check the line to the client’s private home and offer options to choose from. The subscriber determines the best option for himself and enters into an agreement with the service provider.

The next step is that Rostelecom will extend optical fiber to the client’s private home and provide the necessary equipment. If the user requires preliminary configuration, engineers will provide this service for an additional fee.

Alternative connection methods

Internet from Rostelecom is delivered to a private home using GPON technology and in other ways: through a telephone line, using Wi-Fi wireless technology or a mobile modem. Let's consider the options provided by Rostelecom for its subscribers.

Adsl phone line

The answer to the question: is it possible to use the capabilities of a home phone and connect to the Internet from Rostelecom, yes. This is one of the legacy xDSL technologies. To use it, you must have a telephone line in the subscriber's residential building. The user connects a router with an ADSL port to the telephone line through a splitter, and uses a network cable to connect the network device to the computer.

The main disadvantages of working using xDSL technology are its low speed and signal instability. This method is used in remote settlements where there are no other alternatives.

WiFi

In 2014-2015, under the “Closing the Digital Divide” program, the communication service provider installed wireless communication points in small or remote settlements. As a rule, they were installed in the center, and access to them was provided to owners of private houses for a subscription fee.

The disadvantages of this approach are the following:

  1. Short range of wireless communication point. To connect to the World Wide Web you had to be at a distance of no more than 100 meters. That is, most users would have to be outside to access the global network.
  2. Poor service costs a lot of money for residential building owners.
  3. The lack of signal stability and natural conditions did not allow the access point to be used as a permanent connection to the global network.

Taking into account all of the above, after some time such a project was closed. To prevent equipment from being idle, Rostelecom provided wireless Internet to every private home using a communication point. That is, residents bought routers for themselves, using them to strengthen the signal. Over time, the quality of service became higher, and many users provided themselves with wireless Internet in private housing.

Another option for gaining access to the global network is 3G (4G) modems. They use mobile communications from any of the operators: MTS, Megafon, Beeline and others, as well as from Rostelecom itself. The provider is now able to provide mobile Internet service.

To gain access to the World Wide Web, you need to purchase such a modem and connect it to your computer via a USB port. The first launch will take some time, since you need to install the software from the modem, having carried out preliminary configuration. Configuration occurs automatically, without user intervention.

Flaws:

  1. Most cellular operators and Rostelecom do not have towers within an accessible distance from settlements.
  2. The signal quality and speed when using a mobile modem are low.
  3. The provider's inability to provide a stable signal leads to constant connection interruption.

Despite the listed disadvantages, this method has an advantage over other options: it provides the user with complete freedom. You don't need to be near a wireless point or inside a home.

This is due to the requirements of new services and “heavy” applications that can only fully function with a PON connection from Rostelecom. That is why it was necessary to introduce fiber optic technologies that meet the requirements of high-speed Internet.

This article consists of several points:

  • What is PON technology
  • Features of PON Internet
  • Connection equipment
  • Setting up modems

PON technology from Rostelecom

The most important advantage of this technology compared to other types of connections is high data transfer and, as a result, responsiveness of networks. Therefore, a PON connection is optimal for connecting large companies to the Internet.

Currently, Internet speed requirements reach 100 Mbps, and in the near future they will approach 1 Gbps. Only optical cables can support such high performance. This is especially true for large distances, which, of course, exist between the provider and the user.

FTTH (Fiber to the Home) bandwidth is already available to service providers and is routed to the home. Thus, new buildings will serve as the basis of access networks and will be able to function for many years. Constructing FTTH access networks is far from a cheap process, which requires not only labor-intensive construction work, but also significant financial costs.

However, the development of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, which uses a single fiber for incoming and outgoing traffic, has greatly improved the situation. The first of the FTTH networks have already moved to a newer standard, where a single fiber is connected to a passive optical splitter, which in turn distributes the signal to several subscribers.

It was this standard that came to be called PON technology, which Rostelecom is now actively using. Thanks to this technology, the network can support a signal splitting ratio of 1:64 from a single fiber. In addition, Rostelecom PON technologies allow subscribers to use without the use of IP set-top boxes.

Advantages of the Internet using PON technology from Rostelecom

The most significant advantage of PON Internet from Rostelecom is that, with the help of inexpensive optical splitters, a common optical fiber provides a network for many users. But remember that such splitters keep the network responsive for up to 64 users. Thus, this technology is of interest not only to subscribers, but also to service providers who want to replace somewhat outdated copper networks.

Features of PON networks, which can also be called advantages, are:

  • absence of electromagnetic interference, since there is no need to use active equipment directly in the access network;
  • reduction of fiber and equipment in the central office.

PON equipment from Rostelecom provides greater throughput and supports a double distribution coefficient. This means that with a 64-lane allocation, each user will receive a fairly large connection throughput, about 35 Mbps. If the provider uses lower distribution factors, for example, 16 or 32, subscribers will receive even more bandwidth. Thanks to the efficient use of PON standard bandwidth, subscribers are provided with high data transfer speeds. In addition, this technology makes it possible to use not only high-speed Internet, but also multiservice services, such as video, voice, and data.

Which modems are suitable for connecting PON from Rostelecom

GPON technology is an industry-wide interchangeable standard. This indicates that PON modems from any manufacturer will work correctly with devices such as ONT.

This, in turn, reduces the cost of equipment and enables providers to offer subscribers the most favorable tariffs for services. It is also important to note that the updated technology based on XGPON standards increases network performance up to 10 Gbit, while maintaining backward compatibility with already deployed networks.

How to set up equipment

As a rule, PON equipment from Rostelecom does not require careful configuration, since all the necessary parameters have already been entered by the provider. But in some Wi-Fi router models with PON technology, you will need to configure wireless network configurations and set connection parameters. These parameters include the PPPoE type user login and password, which Rostelecom provides to the subscriber when concluding an agreement.

If, after correctly entering all the necessary parameters, the PON indicator on the equipment lights up red, we recommend that you contact Rostelecom customer technical support with this problem.

If you still have questions about this technology, we recommend watching this video.

Many Internet users use fiber optic cable to connect to the Internet, however, almost no one knows what fiber optic is, what it is and how it transmits information?

Optical fiber- This is the world's fastest way to transfer data over the Internet. The optical cable has a special structure: it consists of small thin wires that are separated from each other by a special coating. Each wire transmits light, and the light in turn transmits data across the network. Such a cable can simultaneously transmit data from an Internet connection, landline telephone and television. Therefore, in fiber optic networks, users often combine all three services of the provider and connect the phone, TV, router and computer to the same fiber optic cable.

Fiber optic connection is also called fiber optic communication. It allows information to be transmitted using laser beams, with data easily transmitted over hundreds of miles. The cable components, small fibers, have a very small diameter - thousandths of an inch. Optical beams inside such fibers carry data that passes through the silicon core of each fiber.

Using optical fiber, you can set up connections not only in a large city, but also in large countries, as well as continents. Internet communication between the continents of the Earth is carried out thanks to huge fiber optic cables laid along the ocean floor.

Fiber Internet

The cable allows you to set up a high-speed Internet connection, which is necessary in the modern world. Fiber optic wire is the best way to transmit and receive network data.

Main advantages:

  • Optical fiber is a durable material that has a very high level of throughput. It is this characteristic that is responsible for the high data transfer speed;
  • Secure data transmission - the use of optical fiber allows the software to instantly detect unauthorized access to network data. It is almost impossible for attackers to gain access to information;
  • Fiber optics also have excellent anti-interference levels and good noise reduction;
  • Unlike coaxial cable, due to its special structure (Figure 2), optical fiber has several times higher data transfer speeds, especially audio and video files;
  • Connecting an optical fiber allows you to organize a system for a number of additional options, for example, for installing a video surveillance system or security devices.

The main advantage of a fiber optic cable is that it can provide a connection between two objects that are located at a great distance from each other. This is due to the fact that the cable has no restrictions on the length of the channels.

How to connect to the Internet via optical fiber?

The most popular Internet in Russia, the network of which is organized using optical fiber, is provided by Rostelecom. Let's take a closer look at how to connect the Internet and configure its operation yourself.

First, make sure you have fiber to your home. Next, order the service to connect to the network. Rostelecom must provide you with the data that will ensure connection. Now you need to configure the equipment.

Follow the instructions:

  • After Rostelecom employees have laid out the optical fiber and connected the basic working equipment for working in passive optical networks (PON), all further configuration must be carried out independently;

Remember! It is best to run the fiber optic cable close to the outlet to which the power supply unit (multiplexer) of the ONT terminal will be connected in the future.

  • Next, you need to install the socket and yellow cable, as shown in the figure below;

  • You can have your own Wi-Fi router; purchasing a Rostelecom router is not necessary. An optical terminal, a fiber optic cable and a main cord are connected to wifi, with which the router is connected to an optical outlet. A detailed diagram of connecting a router to a fiber-optic network is shown in the figure;
  • Select a location to install all components that has access to plenty of air and is well ventilated. Tell the installer in advance where to install the network components;

The terminal has a special socket that is used to connect to a computer and to connect the router to the Internet. The terminal is also equipped with two additional sockets for connecting an analog home telephone and several more sockets are needed to connect television from Rostelecom.

After connecting all components, you should check the Internet connections on your computer:

  • Log in to the command line as an administrator. To do this, right-click on the Windows icon and select the required item;

  • Enter the commands netstat -e –s, then ping host, then tracert host, and finally the pathping host command. In this case, host is the address of any website. This checks the connection to the Internet;
  • Now you need to check your connection speed. This can be done using any popular service, for example, Speedtest.
